About the Job

The University of Minnesota, College of Veterinary Medicine, invites applications for an Assistant, Associate, or Full Professor; rank will be dependent upon qualifications and experience. This is a clinical/contract, full-time (100%) faculty position in Comparative Ophthalmology

The successful candidate will be expected to participate in the veterinary ophthalmology service at the Veterinary Medical Center (VMC), providing diagnosis, management, and treatment of ophthalmic cases. Responsibilities include offering ophthalmology consultations to local veterinarians, as well as to faculty and house officers within the institution. This position also presents an opportunity to contribute to the continued development of our ophthalmology program by co-developing an ophthalmology internship and residency program. These initiatives will support the advancement of both the clinical research and teaching missions of the service. Teaching duties will include clinical instruction of veterinary students, interns, and residents, participation in didactic coursework, and contributions to continuing education programs for practicing veterinarians. The successful candidate will be expected to collaborate closely with other faculty members, house officers, and veterinary technicians to uphold a high standard of patient care. As a faculty member, there will be opportunities to engage in ongoing clinical and translational research trials, if desired.

Clinical Service/Clinical Teaching: 60%

Clinical service includes the provision of advanced ophthalmologic care to patients from the Small Animal Hospital, Piper Equine Hospital, and Large Animal Hospital. Responsibilities also include consultation services to over 50 veterinary colleagues within the Veterinary Medical Center and to referring veterinarians in the community. Additional opportunities exist to work with avian and exotic animal species through collaborations with the University of Minnesota Raptor Center and Como Park Zoo.

Teaching responsibilities include clinical instruction of veterinary students, interns, and residents; participation in didactic coursework; and contributions to continuing education for practicing veterinarians. Collaboration with other faculty, house officers, and veterinary technicians is expected to ensure a high standard of patient care and clinical education.

Research/Scholarly Activity:20%

Faculty are encouraged to pursue research projects supported by industry, foundation, or federal funding sources, as well as to provide research mentorship to interns, residents, and graduate students. The College offers robust intramural funding programs, career development resources, and support for collaborative research.

The CVM Research Office offers comprehensive assistance with the preparation and submission of grant applications, both intramural and extramural. Opportunities for interdisciplinary research are available through partnerships with faculty across the College of Veterinary Medicine and the five additional Health Sciences schools (Medicine, Pharmacy, Public Health, Nursing, and Dentistry). Administrative support is available for proposal development.

Our faculty prioritize published research as a visible contribution to the broader veterinary and scientific communities.

Didactic Teaching: 15%

This position will contribute to the development and delivery of didactic instruction across all four years of the veterinary curriculum, as well as in the College's graduate programs. Didactic teaching is expected to emphasize outcome-based, student-centered learning, incorporating active learning strategies that promote clinical reasoning, communication, collaboration, and problem-solving skills.

Support and instruction for teaching is provided by the CVM Academic and Student Affairs Office and the Center for Educational Innovation (including the Early Career Teaching and Learning Program). We will work with you to allow time to prepare teaching materials that currently are needed in the curriculum and based on your interests.

Outreach/Service: 5%

Other job responsibilities include personal development, outreach to external stakeholders and service to the CVM and other veterinary-related professional organizations. Participation in departmental and university service will be appropriate at each stage of your career progression, as is fostering a diverse, inclusive and communicative academic environment in the department and university.

Expectations of the outreach/service component of your position include providing expert advice to referring veterinarians, attending departmental and collegiate faculty meetings, and serving on departmental, collegiate, and university committees.

Specific effort allocation percentages are determined at goal-setting meetings each year. It is understood that your responsibilities may change as the needs of the College, Department, and Section change. Your academic performance will be reviewed annually utilizing Departmental criteria established for contract track faculty members within the Veterinary Clinical Sciences Department.

Qualifications

Minimum qualifications include: DVM/VMD or equivalent veterinary degree, successful completion of an ophthalmology residency with eligibility for, or certification by, the American College of Veterinary Ophthalmologists (ACVO) or European College of Veterinary Ophthalmologists (ECVO) by start date, and evidence of outstanding clinical and interpersonal skills. The successful candidate must be eligible for Minnesota state veterinary licensure. Preference will be given to individuals who are board certified by ACVO or ECVO and who have teaching and clinical experience. Preference will also be given to individuals with an interest in participating in collaborative research projects, resident training, and student teaching.

About the Department

The CVM's Veterinary Clinical Sciences Department advances veterinary medicine through clinical education and mentoring, specialized care of companion animals, and generating new knowledge through clinical research.

  • Teaching
    Veterinary Clinical Sciences faculty members are responsible for a significant portion of the clinical training program for third- and fourth-year veterinary students, as well as small animal internship and residency programs. Faculty members also participate in the veterinary medicine and comparative and molecular biosciences graduate programs.
  • Research
    Faculty and staff are actively involved in clinical and basic research, as well as specialized programs. Research efforts are supported by the Clinical Investigation Center, which coordinates clinical trials.
  • Service and Outreach
    Veterinary Clinical Sciences faculty members provide collaborative clinical services in the Veterinary Medical Center using cutting-edge equipment and offer consultations and continuing education programs for practicing veterinarians in the community.
Pay and Benefits

Pay Range: $100,000 to $200,000; depending on education/qualifications/experience
