About the Job

This is a temp/casual position.

The interpreter provides sign language interpreting services to University students, faculty, staff, and visitors in a variety of settings both on and off campus. This position requires evening and occasional weekend work. Demonstrates ability to interact positively with people from diverse communities.

Responsibilities/Duties:

Interpreting (75%)

  • Provide effective interpreting services to the University community at-large in a variety of situations including but not limited to: undergraduate, graduate & professional school courses, meetings, appointments, commencements, plays, events, University tours, and professional travel, as well as preparing for these assignments to ensure effective service delivery
  • Adhere to the NAD-RID Code of Professional Conduct

Coordination (10%)

  • Coordinate interpreter requests for Disability Resources (DR)
  • Provide timely responses to office communications
  • Provide flexibility in scheduling, accommodating evenings and weekends, on-call shifts

Professional Development, Departmental Service, Campus Service (15%)

  • Stay current on issues relevant to the interpreting profession as well as issues among the cultural communities the profession serves; use this information to promote learning opportunities with and for colleagues
  • Actively support the work of DR by participating in meetings, committees, and projects, as well as facilitation of student accommodations such as assisting exam proctoring & other support tasks, as interpreting schedule allows
  • Follow all University, DR, & Student Life policies and procedures
  • Provide mentoring support for peers and interns as well as seek mentoring support within the unit
  • Promote disability self-advocacy, pride, community, universal design, responsibility, dignity, equity, independence, and the fostering of multicultural community
  • Work actively to create a positive and productive work environment
  • Be an effective spokesperson for DR both inside and outside DR
  • Demonstrate a dedication to continuous improvement

Other duties as assigned which are consistent with the mission of DR.

Qualifications

Essential Qualifications:

  • Have and maintain Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf (RID) and or National Association of the Deaf membership (national) and maintain membership in at least one affiliate chapter of RID
  • Demonstrated knowledge in, and an ongoing commitment to, working effectively with and across diverse communities: including people of color, underrepresented groups and new immigrant populations; American Indians; people with both apparent and non-apparent disabilities; women; people of various gender and sexual identities and expressions; and first-generation students from economically disadvantaged backgrounds

Selection Criteria:

  • Completion of interpreter education program strongly preferred
  • Current national certification strongly preferred
  • Two years experience providing interpreting services, preferably in a postsecondary setting
Pay and Benefits

Pay Range: $35.03-$39.03 per hour; depending on education/qualifications/experience.
