About the Job

Job Summary:

The purpose of this position is to support the Department's community engagement and advocacy efforts. This position is responsible for assisting in establishing, implementing, and evaluating the Department's community engagement strategy, plan, goals, and programming in collaboration with the Vice Chair for Community Engagement and Advocacy, the Department Administrator, faculty, staff, and clinics' existing community leads and Patient Advisory Committees. This individual will prioritize long-term, community-centered relationship building and have experience engaging with communities to facilitate connections for clinics in a cross-clinic health justice model with the purpose of facilitating authentic power-sharing relationships with patients, their families, and wider communities.

Detailed responsibilities include:

Community Relationships: 60%:

  • Help to ensure the Department's community engagement efforts are grounded in participatory practices of trust, mutual respect, shared power, and different ways of knowing.
  • Maintain relationships with current patients and existing community partners.
  • Cultivate meaningful collaborations with geographically located community organizations and members who do not currently receive care at, or have a relationship with, department clinics.
  • Assist community organizations/stakeholders in identifying and developing authentic and trustworthy partnerships with DFMCH, and UMP/M Health Fairview.
  • Partner with UMP practice management resources and utilize reporting for the clinical service unit (CSU) to ensure optimization of faculty clinical practice

Internal and Organizational Relationship Building: 20%:

  • Assist with internal and organizational relationship building across UMP, M Health Fairview and UMN DFMCH to best support DFMCH's community engagement and policy mission.
  • Collaborate with other UMN and M Health Fairview engagement units around mutual engagement opportunities, assuring the alignment of work, and identifying new and ongoing opportunities.

Training: 20%:

  • Contribute to, align, and help to deliver trainings for department faculty, residents, staff, and community partners that further develop and deepen the understanding of and adherence to equity-empowered community engagement strategies, practices, and governance.
  • Coordinate with the Vice Chairs for DEI and Education to embed this education in the Departmental Community Health Course and align the course content with the residency and clinic specific community engagement education and care.
Qualifications

All required qualifications must be documented on application materials.

Required Qualifications:

  • BA/BS degree plus at least four years of experience, or a combination of education and related experience to total eight years.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Experience working independently and as part of a diverse team.
  • Experience establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with varied groups.
  • Work style that is self-motivated, adaptive, and that includes the ability to fulfill a variety of functions within a team-matrix environment without direct supervision.
  • Ability to work occasional evenings and weekends as needed.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Knowledge and experience in conducting community engagement activities in a healthcare or nonprofit setting.
  • Experience giving public presentations and facilitating meetings.
  • Ability to recognize and address issues of equality/equity and social justice.
About the Department

The Department of Family Medicine and Community Health at the University of Minnesota was created more than 50 years ago in response to a legislative mandate to train primary care physicians. Since then, we have been leaders in transforming the specialty through education, research, and patient care. We are the academic sponsor of seven family medicine residencies-five in the Twin Cities, two in Greater Minnesota. We are involved in medical student education activities across the Medical School's two campuses: Twin Cities and Duluth. We sponsor five fellowship programs-sports medicine, hospice and palliative medicine, behavioral medicine, clinical informatics, and human sexuality- and offer continuing medical education opportunities. Pay and Benefits

Pay Range: $33.05 to $37.50 per hour, we anticipate most offers will be around the midpoint of this range, depending on education and experience.
