About the Job

Teaching UST 1000: Learning in Community:
Every UST 1000 instructor is responsible for student-centered instruction of a class of 20-25 new UMD students. The instructor will work closely with the UST 1000 Program Coordinator and most will work with a trained Peer Leader (UMD undergraduate student) to meet the program goals and learning outcomes of the "Learning in Community" program.

Individuals hired as UST 1000 instructors are assigned to teach one or more sections during fall term; reappointment for spring term is contingent upon program needs and instructor performance. Approximately 95% of UST 1000 sections are taught in the fall semester.

UMD faculty may teach UST 1000 as part of their regular teaching load.

Mission:
UST 1000: Learning in Community facilitates the successful transition into college learning and student life at UMD.

Purpose:
UST 1000 facilitates each student's integration into the UMD community by building a classroom environment where individuality and community are explored as an inextricably linked pair. The course not only introduces students to the various tools and resources at UMD, but also explores the students' personal roots, the ways they learn, their individualized plans for learning, and the ways the UMD community will inevitably change because they are here.

Program Goals

  1. Help students become an integrated part of the UMD community
