Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey is seeking a Business Specialist for the Rutgers Center for Cognitive Sciences (
RUCCS). This position will report to the Director of Finance and Operations.
Among the key duties of the position are the following:
- Oversees the day-to-day fiscal and administrative functions related to budgeting, account reconciliation, purchasing, payroll, and general operations for the Rutgers Center for Cognitive Sciences (RUCCS).
- Performs work independently to ensure efficient financial operations and executes comprehensive, complex, and confidential planning to support the unit's operations.
- Serves as the primary preparer and contact for account balances, budget forecasting, and financial planning for the unit.
- Provides monthly and quarterly reports on expenditures and account balances for operating, discretionary, and research spending.
- Partners with the unit's Senior Program Coordinator to provide administrative support for Center events.
- Plans, coordinates, and administers departmental events and programs, overseeing logistics, budgeting, vendor management, expense tracking, and compliance with university policies and procedures.
- Administers departmental personnel, payroll, facilities, and operational functions for the Center.
- Coordinates HR activities, budget compliance, space management and provides academic program support to faculty and students.
- Works collaboratively with university offices to ensure efficient, accurate, and compliant administrative operations.
- Supervises and provides work direction to lower-level staff, assigned work study students, and casual staff.
- Provides support for general inquiries to various stakeholders.
- Performs professional level work with an understanding of the mission, vision, role, and goals of the department and the undergraduate program, independently executing responsibilities within broad work parameters and under general supervision.
- Provides compliance oversight, organization, and reporting in executing programs, projects, departmental operations, and/or processes; is geared to identifying non-routine issues and initiates and carries out problem solving independently with occasional review of output by supervisor; and pro-actively interacts with faculty, students, and visitors in a professional manner with the goal of creating an outstanding service environment.

Qualifications
| Minimum Education and Experience |
- Bachelor's degree in accounting, finance, business administration, or related field; or an equivalent combination of education and/or experience that demonstrates knowledge and understanding of generally accepted accounting principles and practices.
- A minimum of two years relevant experience in a financial/accounting function.

- Professional expertise in generally accepted accounting principles and practices (GAAP), along with a solid understanding and application of accounting concepts, theories, principles, practices, terminology, and methodologies.
- Strong customer service skills are essential, as the incumbent is expected to provide excellent support to both internal and external clients.
- Good communication skills, and computer literacy.

| Preferred Qualifications |
- Experience in college or university environment with budget development and management, grant development tracking and reporting experience.
- Experience in accounting, budget forecasting, and supporting sponsored programs in an academic or non-profit research environment.
- Familiarity with Rutgers online systems or similar platforms used in higher education.
- Familiarity working in an academic setting and working with students and faculty.
- Knowledgeable with financial reporting in Microsoft Excel.

- The work environment is busy with activity of students, faculty and staff.
- This position must manage competing priorities while attending to regular inquiries and problem resolution in a dynamic and complex work environment as variable challenges present demands on a daily basis.
- Must be able to handle interruptions and quickly re-establish focus on multiple tasks at hand on a continual basis. Ability to lift 25 lbs.
