THE POSITION

Would you like to operate critical boiler systems while supporting safe and smooth daily operations inside a secure correctional facility? The Corrections Utility Plant Operator position with the Department of Corrections (DOC) is a fulfilling career for someone who enjoys hands-on technical work. DESCRIPTION OF WORK

This role focuses on operating, maintaining, and repairing boiler plant systems while overseeing inmate workers. Primary responsibilities will involve monitoring equipment, keeping accurate logs, performing testing, and ensuring safe and secure operations. As a Corrections Utility Plant Operator, you will perform the following duties:

  • Boiler Operation: Operate and maintain three natural gas and oil fired boilers under normal and emergency conditions
  • Equipment Maintenance: Maintain pumps, fans, chemical feed systems, and other auxiliary plant equipment
  • Water Testing: Test boiler water chemistry and maintain accurate logs of chemical levels and supplies
  • Housekeeping Duties: Perform cleaning tasks and maintain daily inventories in assigned areas
  • Inmate Supervision: Oversee inmate workers, monitor movement, conduct searches, and maintain safety and security
  • Daily Communication: Complete paperwork, address concerns, and communicate plant needs with the supervisor

Work Schedule and Additional Information:

  • Full-time employment, 40 hours/week
  • Work hours are 6:00 AM to 2:00 PM, 2:00 PM to 10:00 PM, and 10:00 PM to 6:00 AM. This position operates on rotating shifts and days off.
  • This position is eligible for full retirement benefits at age 50 or 55.
  • Telework: You will not have the option to telework in this position.
  • Salary: Selected candidates who are new to employment with the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania will begin employment at the starting annual salary of $49,010.00 (before taxes).
  • A higher salary may be established in accordance with the applicable collective bargaining agreement.

REQUIRED EXPERIENCE, TRAINING & ELIGIBILITY

QUALIFICATIONS

Minimum Experience and Training Requirements:

  • Three years of experience in the operation, maintenance, and repair of a steam or hot water generating plant, or a steam and electric generating plant; or
  • An equivalent combination of experience and training.

Additional Requirements:

  • Successful completion of basic training in Elizabethtown, PA is required.
  • You must be able to perform essential job functions.
