Position Overview

Position Summary

Under limited supervision of the Advising Center Director, the Advisor participates in the planning and delivery of academic advising services and programs that promote student success and support student enrollment, retention, and persistence. The Advisor assists students in making informed decisions regarding their educational goals by providing academic advising, promoting programs, and referring students at risk or in need of additional resources.



Requirements

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Assist incoming first-year students, continuing, readmit, and post baccalaureate students in the development of holistic educational plans, including program selection and goal clarification.
  • Inform students about the alternatives, limitations, and consequences of academic decisions (e.g., adding, dropping, or withdrawing from courses; changing majors; or transferring institutions).
  • Educate students regarding course planning, the registration process, and the verification of prerequisites and degree requirements.
  • Plan, implement, and present workshops-both individually and collaboratively-on topics including Student Success, First-Year Experience, Degree Evaluation, and Undeclared Majors.
  • Support campus outreach initiatives by helping set up, execute, and dismantle major university events, including open houses, Major Fest, ENMU Dawg Days, New Student Orientation, and special registration events.
  • Meet with prospective students and guests to provide information regarding ENMU's programs of study and individual educational goals.
  • Interpret placement test results to determine student readiness for university-level coursework and facilitate accurate initial scheduling.
  • Monitor and assist at-risk students-including conditionally admitted students and provide timely outreach via early-alert notification systems.
  • Identify students perceived as at-risk, serve as a source of support, act as an advocate when appropriate, and make referrals to vital on- and off-campus resources like career and personal counseling.
  • Collaborate closely with Academic Services and the Office of the Registrar to provide students with accurate info on course options, degree pathways, and university policies.
  • Maintain up-to-date knowledge regarding university academic policies, administrative procedures, catalog updates, advising technology, and graduation requirements.
  • Gather, develop, and promote advising best practices to support continuous institutional and departmental improvement.
  • Participate in individual, team, and committee professional development, and serve on ENMU committees as designated or requested
  • Regular and predictable attendance required
  • Perform other job-related duties and projects assigned in support of the University's mission, core values, and goals

Minimum Job Requirements:

  • A bachelor's degree in higher education, education, counseling, social sciences, humanities, or a related field, and one year of experience in academic advising or related careers in post-secondary education, or an equivalent combination of education and/or experience required

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Master's degree in higher education administration, counseling, student affairs, or a closely related field
  • Direct experience with specialized Student Information Systems (SIS)
  • Familiarity with degree audit platforms
  • Prior advising experience working directly within a first-year advising center or a university-wide freshman program

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Ability to effectively analyze ambiguous information and respond appropriately
  • Experience in group presentations
  • Ability to process and maintain highly confidential information
  • Ability to collaborate effectively with individuals of varying backgrounds, abilities, outlooks, ages, and nationalities
  • Knowledge of course disciplines, educational units, and educational history
  • Knowledge of curriculum and academic processes and policies
  • Knowledge of computerized student information systems (Banner Student Module is preferred)
  • Strong oral, written, and interpersonal communication skills with the ability to work professionally and effectively with students, faculty, staff, and community members from diverse backgrounds
  • Ability to work independently, exercise creativity, be attentive to detail, and maintain a positive attitude
  • Ability to manage multiple and simultaneous responsibilities and to prioritize scheduling of work
  • Ability to establish positive and productive working relationships with other units on campus
  • Ability to understand and interpret the history, mission, and goals of the University to students and other constituent groups
  • Demonstrate effective listening skills to interpret individual student needs
  • Ability to promote a safe environment for students and coworkers, including de-escalating high-stress situations
  • Ability to effectively organize and file information both physically and electronically
  • Demonstrate professionalism, integrity, ethical conduct, and sound judgment consistent with University policies and applicable laws

Working Conditions

Physical Demand and Working Conditions:

  • Work is primarily performed in an office setting during normal business hours, but may include evening and weekend hours
  • Work is sedentary in nature with 20 pounds maximum weight to lift and carry; requires reaching, handling with the use of the hands, arms, and fingers, talking, and/or hearing; and seeing
  • Occasional overnight travel may be required to support university registration and recruitment activities
