Introduction

The Clerk of the Circuit Court is a constitutional officer, and the duties of this office are mandated by the Code of Virginia. The Clerk's Office provides multiple statutory and local services for residents, business professionals, legal professionals, judges, public safety officials, a variety of state and local government agencies, and the towns of Loudoun County. The Clerk of the Circuit Court serves as the recorder of deeds and probate judge, issues marriage licenses and is the official court administrator for all civil and criminal court cases. In this latter capacity, the Clerk creates and maintains all court files and records, prepares court orders and jury lists, contacts jurors and issues summons and court processes.


Job Summary

The Office of the Clerk of Circuit Court is seeking a Courtroom Clerk to provide direct service and support to Circuit Court Judges by assisting in the courtroom by preparing criminal court orders, jail release orders, sentencing orders and other criminal case paperwork. The clerk will initiate cases and prepare capias and rules.

The successful candidate will advise and make recommendations to judges regarding the court docket and court matters; expedite the efficient execution of the Court's Daily Docket while prioritizing cases to be heard; and communicate with the attorneys and pro se litigants on issues pertaining to court exhibits, cases, required orders and other court procedures.

The Courtroom Clerk will also analyze and record data pertaining to judge rulings, sentences and probation to properly enter information in the Case Management System (CMS) and for the criminal court orders, as required by the Supreme Court of Virginia; assess and process criminal fines and cost worksheets for criminal defendants upon conviction according to VA Code; administer oaths for witnesses in court; coordinate the appearance of court reporters and court interpreters as required in criminal and civil cases to ensure effective court proceedings; and independently compose all criminal court orders for the judge's entry within three (3) to five (5) business days after hearing.

Hiring salary is commensurate with experience.


Minimum Qualifications

Associates degree with courses in business, public administration, and/or paralegal studies; three (3) years of related work experience preferably in the legal field; or equivalent combination of education and experience.


Job Contingencies and Special Requirements

Must have the ability to lift up to 10 pounds.
Successful candidates will undergo background checks as required.
