Information Technology- Research

The Information Technology Department supports administrative systems, academic technologies, and research computing. System reliability and campus operations are strengthened through IT initiatives. IT roles involve system support, infrastructure maintenance, and technical collaboration with campus units.

Job Description

Are you seeking to make a difference in the lives of students? Are you desirous of enabling research that is changing our world? Would you like to have a strong influence in setting direction for a technology organization whose mission focuses on education, research, and application of knowledge to solve some of the world's great challenges? If so, we would like to talk to you. If you are a potential member of the S&T information technology team and possess humility, coachability, approachability, introspection, and a passion for building relationships, then we would like to speak with you.

This role is a foundational pillar of the S&T Research and Innovation Data Ecosystem (STRIDE), supporting all research efforts by engineering technical solutions that meet strict data retention and security requirements on research data (FERPA, GLBA, NIST-CSF, EAR, ITAR, CUI). Furthermore, STRIDE is the data backbone which research environments, like the campus High-Performance Computing (HPC) and future Miner AI environments are connected to and reliant on. Our faculty, staff, and students are reliant on these computational environments to execute grant funded projects with speed and efficiency. By engineering robust research continuity, data replication, and disaster recovery strategies, this position serves as the university's primary defense against catastrophic data loss that could stall critical research initiatives. Failing to grant this highly specialized position request continues to leave the university exposed to unacceptable levels of compliance risk while also hindering our technological advancement, grant competitiveness, and overall research capability.

Key Responsibilities:

Implementation and Planning

  • Implement storage architectures, integrating multi-site infrastructures, data replication, and data continuity strategies
  • Lead performance tuning, capacity planning, and data tiering initiatives for mission critical systems

Design

  • Architect, design, configure, and implement on-premises and cloud-based storage solutions to support grants, sponsorships, and other researchers' needs, including performance, archive, and backup storage needs to protect integrity, access, retention, and security

Manage

  • Management and support of data storage systems
  • Performing system maintenance, ensuring service availability, ensuring data integrity, and storage system configuration management

User Support and Consultation

  • Technical support of users through tickets, calls, or in-person meetings
  • Consulting with users to understand storage needs, workflows, and data lifecycles, and developing solutions to storage-based needs

Process Improvement and Compliance

  • When appropriate, ensure adherence to FERPA, GLBA, NIST-CSF, EAR, ITAR, CUI, and institutional data governance requirements
  • Recommend process improvements based on user needs and storage technology capabilities
Minimum Qualifications

Bachelors degree or an equivalent combination of education and experience and at least 4 years of experience from which comparable knowledge and skills can be acquired

Preferred Qualifications

  • Bachelors degree in a STEM related field
  • 2 years of experience with data storage platforms
  • Experience with high performance storage in a research computing environment

The anticipated hiring range for this position has been established as $59,738-$100,000 annually.

Salary is determined by a variety of factors, including but not limited to, the individual's particular combination of education, skills, and experience, as well as organizational requirements.
