Position Overview

The Wound Care Registered Nurse is responsible for providing specialized wound, ostomy, continence, and skin integrity care in an acute care hospital setting. This role focuses on the assessment, treatment, prevention, and management of pressure injuries and complex wounds for critically ill patients, including ICU, open heart surgery, and heart and lung transplant populations. The nurse will collaborate closely with bedside nursing staff, educators, and leadership teams to support quality improvement initiatives, reduce hospital-acquired pressure injuries, and ensure evidence-based patient care. The ideal candidate demonstrates strong clinical judgment, proficiency in wound care management, and the ability to work effectively in a fast-paced critical care environment.

Job Responsibilities




  • Assess, treat, and manage acute and chronic wounds, pressure injuries, ulcers, and ostomies in the acute care setting



  • Perform wound assessments including staging, tunneling, undermining, and evaluation of neuropathic, venous, and peripheral arterial ulcers



  • Administer and manage wound treatments and dressings including alginates, foams, hydrocolloids, hydrogels, silver products, VAC therapy, and debriding agents



  • Provide ostomy care and management including colostomy, ileostomy, double barrel stoma, and end stoma care



  • Select and educate patients on appropriate ostomy equipment and continence therapeutic devices



  • Support catheter management, urinary and fecal incontinence programs, and skin integrity preservation initiatives



  • Conduct Braden Scale assessments and implement pressure injury prevention strategies



  • Collaborate with nursing staff and educators to identify opportunities to reduce hospital-acquired pressure injuries



  • Participate in wound rounds, prevalence studies, and quality improvement initiatives



  • Maintain accurate patient documentation and tracking using EPIC and Excel spreadsheets



  • Collect, analyze, and document wound care metrics including staging and present-on-admission status



  • Provide patient and family education related to wound care, infection prevention, and skin integrity management



  • Adhere to infection control standards and isolation precautions



  • Provide care within ICU and critical care environments, including support for open heart surgery and transplant patient populations



  • Remain flexible with scheduling and end-of-shift responsibilities based on patient care and staffing needs




Job Requirements




  • Active New Jersey Registered Nurse license or Compact RN license required at time of submission



  • Current BLS certification required



  • Current CWCN or WOCN certification required



  • Minimum of 1 year of wound care nursing experience required



  • Acute care or critical care experience required



  • Experience caring for ICU patients strongly preferred



  • Proficiency with wound care treatments, dressings, and VAC therapy required



  • Experience with wound and ulcer assessment and management including stages I-IV pressure injuries required



  • Knowledge of infection control practices and isolation precautions required



  • Experience with ostomy and continence care management required



  • Ability to perform ABI and peripheral arterial assessments required



  • EPIC charting experience required



  • Strong communication, documentation, and patient education skills required



  • Ability to manage detailed clinical tracking and reporting using Excel spreadsheets required



  • Flexibility to work varied end times based on operational and patient care needs required



  • Ability to work every other weekend and required holidays based on unit needs




Education




  • Graduate of an accredited School of Nursing required




Work Experience




  • Minimum 1 year of recent wound care nursing experience required



  • Experience in acute care, ICU, or critical care environments required



  • First-time travelers accepted

  • Every other weekend required



  • Holiday coverage required based on unit needs



  • Facility may call off 1 shift per 2-week period



  • Schedule and requested time off approvals must be finalized prior to offer acceptance



  • Local candidates accepted



  • Must maintain flexibility with shift end times to support patient care and operational needs



  • No patient handoff permitted at shift end until responsibilities are completed
