DH VASCULAR LAB PAV L

Job Summary

Under general supervision, serves as Registered Vascular Technologist and principle advisor to the Service Chief and Medical Director on matters pertaining to the imaging evaluation of vascular disease and vascular trauma. Will work as the lead noninvasive diagnostic agent in a group of several peripheral vascular or general surgeons. Duties will be performed to facilitate the care of all vascular patients. Responsible for quality and efficient care of patients with vascular disease and injury. Performs full range of complex non-invasive studies, including vascular ultrasound and physiologic testing, manage own patient load in clinic, and coordinate the schedule of the vascular lab.

Essential Functions:

  • Performs the full range of complex and high quality non-invasive studies in addition to the administrative responsibilities. (10%)
  • Extracranial carotid and vertebral duplex ultrasound examination: Accurate duplex ultrasound examination of the carotid and vertebral arteries is an essential capability of the noninvasive vascular laboratory. Exact performance of carotid and vertebral artery duplex is a highly specialized technical skill. The results of carotid and vertebral duplex directly impact clinical management decisions for patients with life threatening occlusive disease of these arteries. (10%)
  • Duplex ultrasound examination of the abdominal aorta for aneurysm disease: Duplex ultrasound of the abdominal aorta to assess for abdominal aortic aneurysm is an essential capability of any noninvasive vascular laboratory. Accurate performance of this noninvasive test is necessary to avoid life-threatening complications resulting from ruptured abdominal aortic aneurysms. Aortic duplex ultrasound is a highly specialized technical skill that plays an integral role in the management of more than 1 million persons with aortic aneurysms in the US each year. Ill performed, this examination can relate directly to unrecognized aneurysm disease and patient death. (10%)
  • Duplex ultrasound examination of the abdominal aorta and iliac arteries for occlusive disease: Duplex ultrasound of the abdominal aorta and iliac arteries for atherosclerotic occlusive disease is a critical capability of a noninvasive vascular laboratory. This noninvasive modality has replaced invasive contrast arteriography in the diagnosis of blockage disease in this arterial distribution and is a highly specialized technical skill. Performed correctly, duplex ultrasound examination of the abdominal aorta and iliac arteries can detect limb threatening blockages which threaten patients' ability to walk as well as the well-being of their legs altogether. (10%)
  • Duplex ultrasound examination of the abdominal visceral vessels for occlusive disease: Duplex ultrasound examination of the abdominal visceral vessels for occlusive disease includes evaluation of the mesenteric arteries which supply blood to the intestines as well as the renal arteries which supply blood to the kidneys. Accurate performance of this duplex ultrasound examination is a highly specialized technical skill and directly impacts life altering clinical decisions. The capability to perform this noninvasive vascular examination avoids unnecessary performance of invasive contrast arteriography which carries with it considerably higher risk as well as cost. (10%)
  • Duplex ultrasound examination of upper and lower extremity arterial circulations: Duplex ultrasound examination of the arterial circulations of the extremities is essential capability of the noninvasive vascular laboratory. Such detailed examination is a highly specialized technical skill and directly impacts decisions related to treatment of extremity occlusive and aneurysm disease. Technical perfection is necessary in the performance of these studies to avoid misguided clinical decisions which can result in loss of limb function or amputation. (10%)
  • Duplex ultrasound examination of upper and lower extremity venous circulations: Duplex ultrasound examination of the extremity venous circulation of the extremities is a critical capability of the noninvasive vascular laboratory. Accurate detection of deep venous thrombosis (DVT) in the extremity circulation is paramount to allow initiation of appropriate treatment and avoid life threatening venous thromboembolism. Because these examinations directly impact life-saving therapies, there performance demands the highest level of responsibility and specialized technical skill. (10%)
  • Performance of extremity segmental pressure measurements: Performance of segmental arterial pressure measurements of the extremities and digits is a crucial capability of a noninvasive vascular laboratory. Consistent, honest and reliable performance of these examinations is critical to avoid erroneous clinical decisions which may result in loss of limb function or amputation. As such performance of extremity segmental arterial measurements requires the highest level of responsibility and specialized technical skill. Performance of specialized physiologic testing of the extremities: Highly specialize (5%)
  • Provocative testing of extremity circulation is only performed in the noninvasive vascular laboratory. Such provocative testing includes treadmill examination and hot and cold stimulation testing of the extremity circulation the results of which directly impact clinical decisions made to preserve limb and digit viability. (5%)
  • Duplex ultrasound examination in preparation for and in maintenance of hemodialysis access: Duplex ultrasound examination is imperative capability in the preparation of effective hemodialysis access placement. In addition, surveillance of hemodialysis with accurate duplex ultrasound is necessary to maximize longevity of the access and avoid invasive and costly re-intervention. Performance of this duty requires a high level of integrity and responsibility as well as specialized technical skill. (5%)
  • Surveillance of vascular and endovascular reconstruction: Serial duplex ultrasound of vascular reconstructions or repairs is essential capability for the noninvasive vascular laboratory. Surveillance of vascular repairs maximizes their longevity and reduces loss of life and limb. Performance of the full spectrum of surveillance examinations requires a broad experience level as well as highly technical expertise. (5%)
  • Intraoperative duplex ultrasound examination: Ability to perform duplex ultrasound examination in the operating room at the time of vascular repair is essential capability of the noninvasive vascular laboratory. This duty requires entry into the operating room and performance of the exam during the operation and hence requires the highest level of responsibility and technical expertise. (5%)
  • Data Analysis: Performs data best practices and HIPPA compliance. Collects data to promote self, unit and hospital improvement utilizing the ACC NCDR database. (5%)
