Overview:

We are seeking a HFIR Instrument Support - Electrical professional to support the High Flux Isotope Reactor (HFIR) neutron scattering instruments and associated infrastructure.This role will focus onmaintainingand improving electrical equipment and components to ensure safe, reliable, predictable, and efficient operations of HFIR Beamline Operations (HBO).This position will produce a diverse portfolio of electrical engineering and technical support activities, including electrical system design, installation oversight, maintenance coordination, troubleshooting, independent judgment. task leading, and document development.Work may include power distribution systems, electrical design services for beamline instruments and conventional facilities, and experimental equipment.

This positionresidesin the HFIR Instrument Support Group in the HFIR Beamline Operations Section, Neutron Scattering Division,Neutron Sciences DirectorateatOak Ridge National Laboratory(ORNL).

Major Duties/Responsibilities:

  • Design and development of electrical systems with an emphasis on electrical design, including panel layouts, wiring schematics, cable assemblies, and equipment specifications.

  • Provide independent judgment and task leadership for new installations, system upgrades, and maintenance activities.Lead troubleshooting and diagnostic efforts involving electrical cabinets, power distribution systems, circuit boards, embedded control hardware, and related components to ensure compliant field and reliable field installations.

  • Develop andmaintaintechnical documentation, including electrical drawings, schematics, test plans, and work instructions.

  • Evaluate electrical hardware andcomponentoptions to ensure compliance with applicable codes and standards (e.g., NEC, UL)

  • Verifyappropriate electricalsizing, load ratings, and calculations to new and existing systems.

  • Collaborate with multiple divisions to execute work in compliance with HFIR Neutron Scattering work control, configuration management requirements, and safety standards.

  • Lead small to medium design work packages, ensuring coordination of electrical design activities, documentation, system integration, and verification efforts across assigned project scopes.

  • Represent the HFIR Instrument Support Group in cross-disciplinary design discussions and reviews, ensuring electrical design requirements and constraints are appropriately integrated into broader system concepts.

  • Maintain awareness of related processes, instrumentation, and electrical interfaces relevant to HFIR neutron scattering instrument design.

  • Manage assigned tasks independently while coordinating with multidisciplinary teams to meet schedule, scope, and qualityobjectives.

  • Participate in ongoing technical training, professional development, and process improvement activities.

Basic Qualifications:

  • A bachelor's degree in electrical engineering technology, electricalengineeringor a related technicalfield.

  • A minimum of 5 years of experience in electrical design, maintenance, installation, or related support activities.

  • Working knowledge of electrical engineering principles, electrical codes, and applicable industry standards.

  • Experience interpreting and developing electrical drawings and technical documentation.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience supporting industrial, research, laboratory, or facility electrical systems.

  • Experience supporting electrical design and construction projects.

  • Knowledge of power distribution systems and power electronics.

  • Experience troubleshooting electrical or electronic systems using standard laboratory or diagnostic equipment.

  • Proficiencywith AutoCAD or similar drafting/design software.

  • Familiarity with DOE laboratory environments, nuclear facilities, or regulated technical operations.

  • Strong written and verbal communication skills with the ability to work effectively in multidisciplinary teams.

Special Requirements:

  • Work involves various physical requirements and working conditions. As such, a pre-hire physical will berequiredafter offer.
