The International Writing Program (IWP) began in 1967 as a way to bring together a wide range of international writers to examine current trends in world literature. 50 plus years later, the IWP's Fall Residency is the oldest and largest multinational residency in the world, having hosted over 1,600 writes from more than 160 nations at the University of Iowa- a major American research institution internationally renowned for its writing programs- and Iowa City, in part because of the IWP's presence, has been designated a UNESCO City of Literature.

The International Writing Program (IWP) seeks a part-time Program Assistant to support the IWP in its Fall Residency and programming in spring 2027.

The Fall Residency is a 10-week long program for 20 + international writers to spend time in Iowa, writing, researching, and engaging in culturally significant activities. The Program Assistant will work directly with the Fall Residency Coordinator and other staff of the IWP to facilitate program needs prior to, during, and after the writers depart. The writers will be in residence from August 19th to October 28th, 2026. The Program Assistant will also work with the director and other staff on novel programming throughout the year.

This is a year-long part-time position that will begin on July 1 and end on June 30, 2027.

Rate of pay: $20 per hour

Percent of time: 50% variable throughout the year

Work Modality: On Campus

Required Qualifications:

* Proficiency in Microsoft Office (Outlook, SharePoint, Word, Excel, and Forms)

* Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written

* Strong organizational skills and keen attention to detail

* Excellent ability to effectively communicate with individuals with varying levels of English proficiency

* Knowledge of the University of Iowa's graduate and undergraduate departments and campus spaces

* Comfortable engaging with a multicultural cohort of writers and artists

* Familiarity with the City of Iowa City and its literary community and culture

* Availability to work some evenings and weekends during the Fall Residency

Desired Qualifications:

* Working knowledge of AirTable, Qualtrics, and Adobe Acrobat

* A valid US driver's license, driving record subject to UI Fleet Services requirements (a minimum of three years, if that period includes licenses from other states/countries, will need access to the number for review)

* Knowledge of University of Iowa policies, procedures, and regulations

* Knowledge of the University of Iowa's Office of Writing and Communication's mission and initiatives

* Interest in creative writing, particularly from international and multidisciplinary contexts

Responsibilities:

* Assist with event coordination details such as campus room reservations, distribution of physical and digital event flyers, and food and beverage orders

* Document participation and assist with social media promotion

* Assistance with group travel and events (arranging charter bus and event tickets for the Fall Residency cohort)

* May include overnight trip and airline travel to New Orleans from September 28 - October 4 and Chicago from October 25 - 28

* Assist the Fall Residency Coordinator with PCard reconciliation

* Create weekly calendars for physical and digital distribution

* Reserve Fleet vehicles for 1-2 excursions during the Fall Residency

o Serve as a driver for these excursions if necessary

* Escort Fall Residency writers to event spaces in Iowa City and on campus for one-off events

* Other projects as assigned
