The Sterile Processing Technician performs a variety of indirect patient care activities. This includes decontamination of surgical instruments and sterilization of instruments, supplies and equipment. Ensures all necessary instruments/devices are assembled and sterilized correctly and having all case carts assembled according to count sheets. This position observes strict patient confidentiality following all HIPAA regulations and will act in accordance with sterility per the Association for the Advancement of Medical Instrumentation (AAMI), The Joint Commission (JCAHO), Center for Disease Control (CDC), Det Norske Veritas (DNV) and state standards of practice. Primary duties may vary depending on area assigned. This position maintains a clean and safe environment.

Under the supervision of a Registered Nurse, licensed independent practitioner or manager supervises and coordinates all aspects of sterile processing function of medical/surgical supplies and equipment to include decontamination, assembly and sterile processing, sterile storage and distribution. Monitors all sterilization equipment. Maintains a clean, safe environment and ensures an adequate inventory of supplies. Assists in interviewing and hiring new employees as needed. Provides supervision to staff and training of new employees.

Licensure, Certification, or Registration Requirements for Hire:

Certification as a Registered Central Sterilization Technician (CRCST) or Certified Sterile Processing and Distribution Technician (CSPDT) or Surgical Tech certification (CST or TS-C or CORST)

Licensure, Certification, or Registration Requirements for continued employment:

Current CRCST, CSPDT, CST, TS-C or CORST Certification

Experience REQUIRED:

Minimum of three (3) years sterile processing experience

Previous experience with a personal computer

Experience PREFERRED

One (1) year of previous supervisory, management or leadership experience

Previous work experience in an academic medical center environment

Education/training REQUIRED: (Note: work experience may be considered in lieu of credentials not required by law with HR approval. Work experience must be specific to role)

High school Diploma or equivalent

Bachelor's Degree in Healthcare Management, Business Administration or closely related field

Completion of the International Association of Healthcare Central Services Material Management (IAHCSMM) curriculum

Independent action(s) required:

Functions under the direction of RN or independent practitioner in providing indirect patient care, emotional support and problem solving all in accordance with hospital and unit policies/procedures.

Advice and guidance are sought from the Manager/RN/Administrator on an as needed situational basis and when there is a major impact on activity outside the department. Actions that are taken without prior approval include daily operational functions and communications with physicians, patients, staff and related departments in support of patient needs and unit operations.

Serves as liaison with main campus Central Sterile operation (Ambulatory site only).

Job duties may include the access to and/or contact with medications and related supplies.

Supervisory responsibilities (if applicable):

Supervises, manages and evaluates assigned personnel.

Coordinates staff to ensure efficient use of resources i.e. time, equipment, supplies, and personnel.

Ensures compliance with accreditation and infection control standards.

Develops routine assignments for each shift and ensures adequate staffing to maintain operation (Central Sterile Processing only).

Additional position requirements:

May be assigned to rotate shifts, work weekends and holidays as necessary (Central Sterile Processing only). Individual shift rotation (if applicable) and schedules will be established with your specific Nurse Manager/Practice Manager.

Schedules, including requirements of shift rotations (if applicable) and hours of work may be adjusted as necessary to meet staffing requirements or operational needs.
