RN Nurse Educator

Shift: Days

Schedule: Monday-Friday (No Weekends!!)

Newport News Behavioral Health Center is a 108 bed intensive and highly structured residential treatment for psychiatric and behavioral health needs of adolescent males and females ages 11-18yrs. Newport News has an on-site certified school, art and music therapists, and vocational programming. Newport News, VA is a beautiful seaside city, rich in maritime history and conveniently located to DC and other major North Eastern cities.

Summary of Core Job Functions:

The Nursing Educator is responsible for assisting the DON in evaluating, reviewing, designing and implementing hospital training events with respect to all RN/LPN/MHT staff for required training. Also provides, on an as-needed basis, patient nursing assessments.

PRIMARY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Regularly facilitates and/or conducts required training classes with all Nursing Services staff.
  • Works closely with the DON and Nursing Supervisors to review current education and training needs.
  • Recommends improvements to training programs as needed or as identified.
  • Provides on-going nursing education to staff on a variety of topics as directly relates to performance improvement initiatives, JACHO and other State or Federal Regulatory Agency standards/requirements.
  • Provides feedback to the PI Committee, reporting staff education and recommendations for improvements.
  • Works in collaborative manner with the Infection Control Nurse to identify and assist in training as needed.
  • Researches current best practices among other institutions/facilities to ensure hospital is providing most recent and best practices with respect to staff education and training.
  • Meets with all new nursing staff new employees to ensure a complete orientation to nursing services.
  • Maintains knowledge of the TERM document and each element of the document as it relates to the position.

Qualifications

POSITION QUALIFICATIONS

Current Virginia RN licensure. BSN of an accredited school of nursing required; MSN preferred. Experience in Psychiatric Nursing desirable. Minimum of three (3) years direct clinical experience preferred in a psychiatric or mental health setting, with direct experience in staff education, nursing practices, patient assessments, education concepts, practices and procedures.
