| Position Summary |
This position will serve as a Research Technician within the Department of Pediatrics. The mission of the Department of Pediatrics is: (1) to provide state of the art critical care, chronic care, and acute care of children with a full spectrum of pediatric disorders; (2) to teach Medical Students, Residents and Fellows to excel in the field of pediatric medicine and; 3) to conduct highly meritorious clinical and/or laboratory-based investigation in each division or program.
The Division of Infectious Disease serves the children of North Carolina in the diagnosis and treatment of children with a broad range of known or suspected infections or infectious diseases and evaluations of fever of unknown origin.
The Division is expanding its laboratory and clinical research endeavors. Established and anticipated research studies and associated personnel will create a nationally recognized program. The program will be dedicated to prevention and treatment of microbial diseases of childhood, adolescents and young adults, and the education of community physicians, allied health professionals and the public.
The Research Technician assists in the organization and completion of laboratory experiments, as well as performance of assays with cells and tissues. The technician will perform various cell propagation protocols for both eukaryotic cells and bacteria and standard molecular and cell biology techniques. The technician will assist in data processing, statistical analysis and graphic presentation of data. Additional responsibilities include preparing and disposing of reagents necessary for research, and maintaining lab inventory, including timely ordering of required supplies. The incumbent will be expected to conduct difficult/complex lab testing, develop methods and procedures to be used in research protocols and experiments, and assist the Principal Investigator with grant proposals, reports and research publications. |
| Minimum Education and Experience Requirements |
Demonstrated possession of the competencies necessary to perform the work. |
| Management Preferences |
- Knowledge of natural sciences (biology, biochemistry, chemistry, etc.)
- Prior experience with tissue and cell culture, chlamydial culture and/or animal modeling, calculating chlamydia inclusion forming units, calculating chlamydial burden, mouse colony management, mouse chlamydia infection, monitoring mouse chlamydial burden, mouse genital tract harvesting.
- Prior experience with molecular techniques including polymerase chain reaction assays, antibody ELISA assays, making solutions in the lab.
- Prior experience with Prism graph pad generating data graphs and data statistics.
