Department Overview

The University Birthing Suites is a birthing center with facilities that can accommodate patients in various phases of observation, antepartum labor and delivery. The unit includes two operating rooms and two recovery rooms, permitting family access for instant bonding. Our on-site obstetric emergency department is also available for evaluation of obstetric issues 24/7. The Women's Pavilion is a 24-bed unit which consists of antepartum, postpartum as well as medical-surgical patients. Both units have a normal newborn nursery; however, most infants remain in their mother's room for family centered bonding after their initial assessment. Both units serve a very diverse population spanning over 33 counties; our highly skilled perinatologists receive referrals from throughout this geographic region for high-risk pregnancies, fetal surgeries, and pregnancy terminations. We have a robust fetal care and treatment center and family planning department that contribute to our patient population needing pregnancy termination for various indications including for maternal, fetal and elective indications. Comprehensive patient care is provided by a collaborative team which includes registered nurses, medical students, interns, residents and faculty physicians; the team also includes unit clerks, social workers, dieticians and physical therapists.
