Position Title: ASL (American Sign Language) Instructional Assistant Department: Special Student Services Location: Hillsboro School District Reports To: Coordinator Compensation: Classified Salary Schedule - Range D $22.39 - $26.73 per hour; DOE Bargaining Unit: OSEA Work Days: 190 days FTE: 0.9375 FTE - 7.5 horus per day **Must be at least proficient in ASL. General Description: In alignment with the NWRESD's mission statement, this position works in partnership with Regional Staff to maximize the development of American Sign Language skills within a specific deaf and hard-of-hearing student. The American Sign Language Instructional Assistant will assist the teachers by supplementing classroom instruction by carrying out selected activities.
Qualifications: To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill and/or ability required. 1. High school diploma or equivalent. College experience is preferred. 2. American Sign Language fluent expressively and receptively. 3. Knowledge of Deaf culture. 4. Proficiency with reading and writing English. 5. Knowledge of tutorial/instructional procedures is preferred. 6. Experience working with children is preferred
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, and ABILITIES: 1. Demonstrate a commitment to diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging through continuous development, modeling inclusive behaviors, and proactively 1 managing bias. 2. Ability to exhibit professionalism and effective human relations. 3. Confer regularly with immediate supervisor. 4. Proficient in the use of computer and internet-based applications, including but not limited to email, internet software, Google Suite, and word processing (MS Word). 5. Ability to work with a very high degree of accuracy and organizational skills. 6. Skillfully utilize educational technology and software as required by the position.
Essential functions: Include the following. Performs some or all of the following tasks. Other Duties may be assigned. The duties listed below are not inclusive, but characteristic of the type and level of work assigned for this position.
A. Assist families and students in the development of sign language skills B. Under the supervision of the Teacher of the Deaf or classroom teacher, the Instructional Assistant will provide support to deaf students, or those who use sign language C. Assist deaf and hearing students in learning about Deaf culture D. Work cooperatively with building staff to assist in integrating Deaf students into the school community E. Participate in activities, in-services, and workshops to improve knowledge and skills F. Help to facilitate communication between students and school staff/students, as needed G. Assist the Teacher of the Deaf in reinforcing instruction, material preparation, and recording student progress H. I. Work collaboratively and communicate effectively with staff and students at all organizational levels. I.
