What Your Job Will Be Like

Do you have a passion for Model Based Systems Engineering (MBSE) and speak SysML? Do you have experience and a desire to work on innovative programs and associated pathfinder technologies? Do you want to be part of the Digital Engineering transformation?

If so, we are currently seeking a Systems Engineer (SE) with MBSE experience to join our team.

On any given day, you may be called on to:

  • Implement approaches for MBSE and Digital Engineering to incrementally advance Systems Engineering methodologies and use in support of multiple programs.
  • Develop and implement project plans for product development efforts.
  • Perform Concept of Operations Development, Requirements Analysis & Definition, Trade Studies, Design Analysis, Interface Design & Assessments, System Integration & Test Planning, System Verification & Validation/Qualification, and Configuration Management activities.
  • Develop, implement, and maintain SysML Architectures and Models for various systems and components.
  • Develop MBSE reuse products that enable other modelers to be more efficient.
  • Develop and deliver tailored training to other users and/or teams.
  • Use physical and computational simulation, analysis, and evaluation as inherent activities of verification.
  • Conduct technical review sessions with peers and relevant SMEs to improve the quality and fidelity of MBSE models.
  • Work on programs across Sandia's mission space as part of a dynamic team that develops and modernizes our Nation's most critical weapon systems to ensure strategic deterrence for the nation.

Due to the nature of the work, the selected applicant must be able to work onsite in Albuquerque, New Mexico up to 75% of the time. Must have the ability to occasionally travel.

Salary Range

$117,500 - $235,700

*Salary range is estimated, and actual salary will be determined after consideration of the selected candidate's experience and qualifications, and application of any approved geographic salary differential.

Qualifications We Require

  • A Bachelor's degree in a relevant discipline and five (5) years of directly relevant experience, or an equivalent combination of directly relevant education and engineering or scientific experience that demonstrates the knowledge, skills, and ability to perform independent research and development.
  • The ability to obtain and maintain a DOE Q-level security clearance.
Qualifications We Desire

The ideal Systems Engineer candidate for Sandia National Laboratories will in addition possess the following:

  • Graduate degree in Engineering or a highly related field where an independent research project was a graduation requirement (e.g., independent project, thesis, or dissertation).
  • Experience working with Nuclear Security Enterprise (NSE) laboratories and plants including Pantex, Kansas City National Security Campus (KCNSC), Lawrence Livermore Laboratory (LLNL) and Kansas City National Security Campus/New Mexico Operations (KCNSC/NMO).
  • Experience working on engineering design, qualification, production, or related modeling/simulation projects.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills, ability to work effectively in multidisciplinary teams.

Also, for this posting we are seeking individuals with the following experience:

  • An active DOE L-level or higher security clearance or an active DOD Secret or higher security clearance.
  • Familiarity with Nuclear Deterrence (ND) Product Realization Teams, Phase 6/6.X Product Realization process or Product Definition systems (PRIME/IMS).
  • Experience with model-based systems engineering (MBSE) tools using the SysML language (e.g. MagicDraw/Cameo, Rhapsody, Enterprise Architect).
  • Experience in architecture development.
  • Experience with systems engineering principles and implementation.
  • Experience transitioning an organization into a digital environment.
  • Experience working in an R&D environment.
  • Experience working in a fast pace, constantly changing environment.
  • Experience developing and maintaining Interface Control Documents.
  • Experience with requirements development, capture, tracking, and validation.
  • Experience with engineering design (taking an idea from concept through demonstration).
  • Experience with configuration management processes and tools.
  • Experience with integrating tools in a Digital Engineering ecosystem.
  • Proficiency in written and verbal communication, including verbal presentations to audiences of peers, management, and customers.
  • A history of social and business acuity, and comfort communicating through challenging situations.
About Our Team

The Model Based Systems Engineering (MBSE) Capability Development department provides Systems Engineering expertise to programs across Sandia seeking to implement MBSE. We enable customers to transform their systems engineering processes utilizing model-based tools and approaches, helping them to unlock the potential that MBSE has to offer. We support a wide variety of programs through both capability development, as well as embedded MBSE expertise, and are part of Sandia's Digital Transformation activities.

Security Clearance

Sandia is required by DOE to conduct a pre-employment drug test and background review that includes checks of personal references, credit, law enforcement records, and employment/education verifications.
