The University Controller's Office is a department within the Finance Division. The office has business units covering the following areas: general accounting, cash services, asset management, financial reporting, payroll, accounts payable, debt, and the university's tax compliance.

The University Controller's Office works to advance NC State as a leader in fiscal accountability and responsibility through a partnership with our campus community, strong partnerships with our peer groups, improvements in the University's financial systems and internal controls, and efficient and effective business operations. The University Controller's Office is responsible for fiscal accountability, accuracy, and reporting of the university with a net position of approximately $2.0 billion, including timely and accurate payment of monthly and biweekly wages to over 18,000 staff, faculty, student workers, and temporary employees, over 117,000 vendor payments annually, and management of a $550 million external debt portfolio.

Essential Job Duties
Are you an accounting professional who enjoys balancing technical work with team leadership? As the Accounting Manager in the University Controller's Office, you will work closely with the Accounting Director to support the University's financial reporting, contribute to the integrity of the Annual Comprehensive Financial Report ( ACFR), and oversee debt-related activities in alignment with GASB standards, SEC requirements, and other applicable regulations.
You'll play a key role in preparing portions of the ACFR, supporting debt compliance and reporting, and helping ensure financial processes run smoothly. This position also provides the opportunity to guide a small team, contribute to process improvements, and collaborate with partners across the university.
Key responsibilities fall within four functional areas outlined below.
Financial Systems, Management & Compliance

  • Support the integrity of the ACFR by applying GASB standards and ensuring debt-related activities align with SEC requirements and other applicable regulations
  • Oversee debt-related activities, including reporting, compliance, and coordination with internal and external partners
  • Serve as a point of contact for auditors on debt-related matters
  • Provide guidance on financial systems, chart of accounts, and internal controls
  • Coordinate and monitor year-end financial reporting activities


Strategic Financial Operations & Analysis

  • Assist with financial modeling and analysis to support capital planning and cash management
  • Prepare assigned portions of the ACFR related to debt, including financial statements and disclosures
  • Identify opportunities to improve processes and support implementation of internal controls
  • Provide financial analysis and reporting to support decision-making

Supervision & Administration

  • Supervise and support professional staff, including setting expectations and providing feedback
  • Participate in hiring, onboarding, and staff development
  • Help manage workload and timelines, particularly during peak reporting periods
  • Serve as backup to the Accounting Director for assigned areas

Communication & Stakeholder Engagement

  • Communicate financial and regulatory information clearly to internal stakeholders
  • Provide guidance to campus partners on financial processes and requirements
  • Maintain working relationships with external partners, including auditors and advisors
  • Prepare materials and support meetings related to debt and financial reporting

Minimum Education and Experience
Bachelor's Degree in Accounting, Business, Finance, or Other Discipline related to the area of assignment with 12 Credit Hours of accounting coursework and three years of professional accounting experience, of which at least one is supervisory; or equivalent combination of training and experience. Some positions may require additional credit hours of accounting coursework.

All degrees must be received from appropriately accredited institutions.

  • Background in public accounting, auditing, or financial reporting, including preparation or review of financial statements and support of audit processes

  • CPA license or progress toward CPA eligibility (e.g., completed coursework or passed one or more exam sections)
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills demonstrated through reports, documentation, or presentations for varied audiences
  • Proven ability to lead or supervise others, including assigning work, reviewing outputs, and supporting employee development
  • Skilled at interpreting and applying Federal, State, GASB, UNC System, or similar regulatory frameworks to guide decisions and implement policy
