The Opportunity

The Field Safety Specialist provides expert technical guidance, implements risk mitigation strategies, and collaborates with cross-functional teams to ensure workplace safety and effective work execution. This role requires a proven leader who can successfully influence and motivate staff, management, and contractors to prioritize safety performance.

Our US Safety team is seeking a Safety Specialist to join our operations in North Dakota. The ideal candidate will support routine operations, special projects, and construction activities throughout their assigned region.

We're looking for a professional with substantial experience in occupational safety, process safety, pipeline transmission operations, and construction/project execution. The successful candidate will be a skilled facilitator who thrives with autonomous work, demonstrates strategic decision-making abilities, excels at problem-solving, and possesses outstanding organizational and communication skills.

What you'll do

  • Provide leadership, guidance, and mentoring to personnel on safety processes and issues.

  • Conduct safety training as required to instruct employees in safe work practices and emergency procedures.

  • Provide occupational health and safety guidance and support for regional site/area managers.

  • General oversight and technical support of various fire protection systems, regulatory permits, staff certifications, record keeping, and related inspections, tests, and preventative maintenance.

  • General oversight and technical support of employee medical surveillance, respirator fit testing, noise surveys, PPE selection/administration, onsite hazardous material management, general waste management, and facility safety equipment maintenance (spill kits, first aid, showers, etc.)

  • Support and potentially lead incident and accident investigations resulting in innovative and practical solutions to corrective actions.

  • Share best practices with multi-functional teams.

  • Effectively collaborate with stakeholder teams to resolve issues.

  • Support US Safety leadership through raising ideas and supporting the implementation of safety programs that support local and enterprise goals.

  • Conduct and monitor employee/contractor safety training within area of responsibility.

  • Lead frequent facility safety reviews with facility leadership.

  • Manage on-site hazardous material issues.

  • Interact with external visitors during onsite inspections.

  • Support general compliance in facility oil and chemical handling, spill response, equipment maintenance, and related record keeping.

  • Work collaborative with teams to correct safety deficiencies.

  • Support work planning and up-front risk and hazard identification and mitigation strategies.

  • Support the design, development, and maintenance of health and safety policies and programs.

  • Assist in the development and implementation of employee safety programs.

  • Lead safety reviews to monitor and ensure fit-for-purpose safety programs.

  • Assist and drive implementation of safety programs.

  • Carry out inspections to monitor compliance to federal, provincial, and local regulations.

  • Carry out special studies of accidents and causes and maintain safety-related records.

  • Other tasks as required.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Minimum of 5+ years of related experience

  • Certification or degree in a related discipline of Health, Safety and Environment or relevant experience in lieu of education.

  • Technical acumen in confined space, electrical safety, lock out tag out (LOTO), hot work, elevated work, process safety, vehicle safety, and related areas

  • Strong organizational skills, technical competence, and attention to detail

  • Responsive to customer needs and requests.

  • Excellent communication skills (interpersonal and written)

  • Proven ability to collaborate with multi-disciplinary teams of varying sizes.

  • Proven ability to assess safety expectations and proactively course correct.

  • Anticipates and thrives in dynamic environments and changing requirements.

  • Exercises independent judgment in the planning, organization, and completion of assignments.

  • Experience with loss control, risk management, and safety programs

  • Comprehensive knowledge of applicable industry and government regulations including OSHA, FERC, PHMSA, CSB, and EPA.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Certification or accreditation with a safety board (CSP or equivalent)

  • Advanced computer skills

  • Experience in major safety software such as Enablon, Blueworx, SAP.

This position requires candidates to:

  • Successfully complete pre-employment medical screening including drug and alcohol testing

  • Have and maintain a valid driver's license and provide a driver's abstract (record) for review

  • Travel to other company locations for temporary assignments, meetings or training (estimated up 60% of work schedule)

  • Stay overnight away from home base (estimated up 40% of work schedule)

  • Be part of an on-call rotation and provide emergency support as required

  • Successfully complete pre-employment background checks

  • Have current, valid authorization to travel internationally (including but not limited to Canada, US and Mexico)

  • Climb ladders and stairs, wear a respirator, work in extreme temperatures, and walk extensively in indoor and outdoor industrial areas
