| Job Duties |
INTERNAL POSTING: Open only to applicants currently employed by East Carolina University.
The Assistant Director of Academic Systems provides leadership, strategic oversight, and operational management of the university's student administrative technology ecosystem. This includes systems that support student information, admissions, advising, registration, learner operations, financial aid, and other core academic administrative functions. Leading a team of analysts and technical staff, the Assistant Director partners with campus stakeholders to ensure these systems are reliable, secure, optimized, and aligned with institutional goals for student success and operational excellence.
Leadership & Team Management
* Lead, supervise, and mentor a team of functional and technical staff responsible for academic systems.
* Develop team goals, set priorities, and ensure high-quality delivery of system support and enhancements.
* Promote a culture of collaboration, continuous improvement, and excellent customer service.
* Coordinate and oversee daily team operations by delegating tasks strategically, allocating resources effectively, supporting efficient workflow execution, and ensuring timely completion of responsibilities and projects.
* Develop staff skills through coaching, training, and professional development opportunities
Academic Systems Oversight
* Provide oversight for the implementation, maintenance, and optimization of core student administrative systems, including the Student Information System (
SIS), admissions systems, advising tools, registrar systems, and learner operations platforms.
* Ensure system integrity, data accuracy, and compliance with institutional policies,
UNC System policies, and regulatory requirements (e.g.,
FERPA).
* Oversee configuration, upgrades, integrations, and testing for academic systems.
Stakeholder Engagement & Collaboration
* Serve as a primary point of contact for campus stakeholders including Enrollment Management, Registrar, Advising, Admissions, Financial Aid, and Academic Affairs.
* Collaborate with functional owners to understand business processes, gather requirements, and identify opportunities for process improvements and system enhancements within Academic Systems.
* Facilitate communication and coordination between technical teams, functional users, and vendors.
Operational Excellence & Support
* Ensure reliable system performance, monitoring, and issue resolution.
* Oversee the development of end-user documentation, training, and support materials.
* Support data governance and reporting needs in partnership with institutional research and other data stakeholders.
The standard work schedule for this position will need to be adjusted to meet the position requirements, which include and are not limited to evening and weekend hours to perform scheduled and unscheduled workload requirements to maintain University operations.
This position may be eligible for Flexible Work Arrangements (
FWA) under the
ECU
FWA Policy.
This position requires the employee to reside within a reasonable commutable distance of the
ECU main campus. "Reasonable commuting distance" is defined as a location that does not exceed a distance that can be safely traveled in two hours by automobile under average conditions of traffic, weather, and roads to employee's assigned duty station in Greenville, NC.

Bachelor's degree and 2 years of relevant experience or equivalent combination of education and experience.
All degrees must be received from appropriately accredited institutions.

* Experience with major higher education
SIS platforms (e.g., Banner, PeopleSoft, Workday).
* Knowledge of admissions, advising, registration, and learner lifecycle processes.
* Familiarity with data privacy regulations and compliance standards (e.g.,
FERPA).
* Experience working in a complex higher education environment.
* Supervisory experience leading and motivating teams, including the oversight, coaching, and professional development of staff to meet performance targets and support long-term growth.
* Demonstrated ability to coordinate daily operations, assign responsibilities, and ensure timely task completion. |
