Position Summary
We are seeking an experienced Phlebotomist II to join a busy 2-person patient service center in Sugar Land, TX. This role involves performing blood draws, specimen processing, and patient interaction in a fast-paced doctor's office environment serving primarily adult and elderly patients. The site experiences high patient volume, especially during mornings, and includes handling difficult draws. Average daily volume is approximately 30-35 draws. This is a contract opportunity with potential for extension or conversion, supporting coverage for FMLA leave.
Key Responsibilities
- Perform venipuncture using straight and butterfly needles, including difficult draws on adult and elderly patients.
- Label, centrifuge, split, and freeze specimens as required.
- Ensure proper specimen collection, handling, and storage per protocols.
- Clearly explain procedures to patients and provide a positive experience.
- Match requisitions to specimens and ensure 100% accuracy.
- Review and verify physician orders and test requisitions.
- Package and route specimens to appropriate laboratories.
- Enter patient data and update records in system; perform basic troubleshooting.
- Maintain records and perform decontamination as needed.
- Answer phone calls and provide lab-related information.
- Ensure compliance with OSHA and other regulatory standards.
- Attend trainings and contribute to workflow improvements.
- Collaborate with team members in the morning; work independently in the afternoon.
Work Environment
- Busy patient service center within a multi-doctor office setting.
- High-volume, fast-paced environment (especially mornings).
- Requires standing for most of the shift (1-hour lunch break).
- Combination of team-based and independent work.
Minimum Qualifications
- High School Diploma or GED required.
- Minimum 6 months of venipuncture experience in a fast-paced lab or hospital setting.
- Strong experience with difficult draws preferred.
- Basic computer skills and familiarity with Microsoft Office.
- Strong communication and customer service skills.
- Ability to manage high patient volume (30-35 draws/day).
- Ability to stand for extended periods.
Certifications
- Phlebotomy certification preferred (NHA, AMCA, AMT, or equivalent).
Additional Requirements
- Required screenings: MMR, TB, Hep B (declination accepted), and Color Vision Test.
- Flexibility for assigned schedule and potential overtime.
