Position Summary:

The Medical College of Wisconsin's Department of Pediatrics, Division of Hematology, Oncology, Bone Marrow Transplant, is seeking a Nurse Practitioner or Physician Assistant to provide care within the specialty clinic, day hospital, infusion clinic, translational research unit and inpatient unit. TheAdvanced Practice Provider(APP) works as a member of a multidisciplinary health care team who will contribute to excellence in program administration, patient care, patient safety, research, quality improvement, and teaching. This position is located in Milwaukee, WI at Children's Wisconsin hospital campus location.

Position Highlights:

Patient Care:

  • This position provides Advanced Practice Provider (APP) support to the Hematology services. In this role, the APP works with the attending physician to care for hematology patients in a variety of clinical settings including inpatient, Day Hospital, infusion clinic and translational research unit and clinics.

  • This APP provides comprehensive health care services to support hospitalized patients who have been diagnosed with hematologic disorders. This work is performed in collaboration with the hematology faculty and staff to complete initial and follow-up consultations including clinical status assessment; develop the plan of care; communicate and follow up with the referring service to facilitate coordinated evaluation and management of hematologic disorders.

  • This APP is expected to understand and integrate into the delivery of care the needs of pediatric and adolescent patients in regard to their growth and development. Some cross-training in relevant hematology areas is expected. In addition, cross-coverage of other APP providers in the hematology section will also occur when needed. Actively supports Children's Wisconsin (CW) and the Department of Pediatrics' quality, safety goals and service excellence principles.

  • High-level overview of patient population

  • This position will support work at the Milwaukee campus and may be asked to support expansion of services at regional sites.

  • Team dynamic (faculty/APP ratio, other providers/clinicians they may interact for clinical support, etc.)

  • This position will work with a multidisciplinary team including medial assistants, nurses, advanced practice providers, physicians, and other supportive services including social work, dietitians, psychologists and others.

Schedule:

  • Full-time role with typical office hours Monday - Friday

  • Weekend and Holiday coverage as needed by the service.

  • Salaried (Exempt)

Department/Division Highlights:

The Division of Hematology/Oncology/Blood and Marrow Transplant provides treatment for infants, children, teens and young adults with blood disorders including cancer, non-malignant blood diseases, immunodeficiency states and bleeding disorders. We also are committed to expanding research and teaching efforts to enhance the national recognition and prominence of the program. The pediatric blood and marrow transplant program is a joint venture between the Medical College of Wisconsin (MCW) and Children's Wisconsin.

The pediatric BMT Program is an integral part of the continuously FACT accredited MCW BMT Program which is a joint program integrating the transplant teams and services of Children's Wisconsin, Froedtert Hospital, Versiti Blood Center of Wisconsin and MCW. The pediatric BMT program, initiated in 1980, has performed more than 900 transplants. The program is one of the largest and most experienced in the U.S. utilizing alternative donors such as unrelated individuals or mismatched family members as donors.

Preferred Experience:

  • Previous APP specialty experience preferred

Minimum Education:
  • Advanced Practice Nurse: Master's Degree or higher in Nursing from a nationally accredited organization.

  • Physician Assistant: Bachelor's Degree or higher in Physician Assistant Studies from an ARC-PA-accredited organization.

  • Wisconsin RN License

  • Wisconsin Advanced Practice Nurse Prescriber License

  • Certification as Advanced Practice Nurse

  • American Heart Association Basic Life Support (BLS)

  • Certification by National Commission on Certification of Physician Assistants (NCCPA)

Children's Wisconsin and Children's Specialty Group

Children's Wisconsin is an independent health care system dedicated solely to the health and well-being of children. The hospital, with locations in Milwaukee and Northeast Wisconsin, is recognized as one of the leading pediatric health care centers in the United States. In 2021-2022, CW and CSG had six specialties ranked by US News & World Report: cancer; cardiology and heart surgery; gastroenterology and GI surgery; neurology and neurosurgery; orthopedics; and pulmonology.
