Job Title: Medical Lab Scientist I (MLS / Medical Technologist)

Location: 810 St. Vincent's Drive, Birmingham, AL 35205


Position Details:

  • Duration: 6+ months
  • Shift: 1st Shift | Full-Time (40 hours/week) | Every Other Weekeend


Job Summary:

We are seeking Medical Lab Scientists (MLS) to join a high-volume Core Lab environment at UAB St. Vincent's Birmingham. This role involves performing a wide range of laboratory testing across multiple disciplines, including Hematology, Urinalysis, Coagulation, Microbiology, and Blood Bank.

The ideal candidate will be a strong generalist who can work independently while contributing to a collaborative team environment.


Key Responsibilities:

  • Evaluate specimen acceptability based on established criteria
  • Perform routine and complex laboratory testing per SOPs
  • Operate, monitor, and troubleshoot laboratory instrumentation
  • Make technical decisions and resolve testing issues
  • Prepare and evaluate reagents, controls, and test systems
  • Report accurate and timely test results
  • Perform preventive maintenance and quality control procedures
  • Maintain adequate inventory of lab supplies
  • Assist with specimen processing when needed
  • Ensure compliance with safety protocols and PPE requirements


Daily Focus Areas:

  • Hematology
  • Urinalysis
  • Coagulation
  • Microbiology
  • Blood Bank (required)


Education Requirements:

  • Bachelor's degree in Medical Technology, Clinical Laboratory Science, Biology, Chemistry, or related field
  • Must meet CLIA requirements for high-complexity testing


Experience:

  • 0-2 years of clinical lab experience (2+ years preferred)
  • Blood Bank experience required
  • Strong generalist experience across core lab areas


Certifications & Licenses:

  • ASCP or AMT certification preferred (open to eligible candidates)
  • State license if applicable


Skills & Competencies:

  • Ability to work independently and in a team environment
  • Strong attention to detail and organizational skills
  • Proficiency with computers; Cerner PathNet (LIS) is a plus
  • Strong communication skills
  • Ability to pass color vision screening
  • Flexibility for overtime or shift changes


CLIA Qualification Requirements (Must meet one):

  • Bachelor's in Medical Technology / Clinical Lab Science OR
  • Bachelor's in Chemical, Physical, or Biological Science + 1 year relevant experience/training OR
  • 90 semester hours (Biology, Chemistry, Math) + lab training or 1 year experience OR
  • Associate's degree in Medical Technology


Screening & Compliance:

  • Color Vision Test: Required
  • TB Test: Required
  • Vaccinations:

    • Hepatitis B (offered; can decline)
    • Flu (required; declination accepted)
