Position Title: Medical Lab Technician IV - Blood Bank / Core Lab

Work Location: 810 St. Vincents Dr, Birmingham, AL

Duration: 3 Months

Work Arrangement: Onsite

Work Schedule:



  • 1st Shift: 5:00 AM - 1:30 PM
  • 8-hour shifts
  • 40 hours per week


Position Summary

Responsibilities are interchangeable within the job titles of Medical Lab Technician (MLT), Medical Technologist, or Clinical Laboratory roles. This position primarily focuses on Blood Bank (transfusion medicine) with additional Core Lab responsibilities as needed.


Key Responsibilities

  • Determine specimen acceptability based on established criteria
  • Perform routine and complex laboratory procedures as per SOPs
  • Monitor, operate, and troubleshoot laboratory instrumentation
  • Make technical decisions related to testing and problem-solving
  • Prepare, test, and evaluate reagents and controls
  • Report accurate and timely test results
  • Perform and document preventive maintenance and quality control
  • Maintain inventory and replenish lab supplies
  • Assist with specimen processing when required
  • Ensure compliance with safety protocols and PPE usage
  • Primary focus on Blood Bank; support Core Lab functions as needed


Qualifications & Experience

Education:



  • Associate's Degree (AS) in Medical Technology, Clinical Laboratory Science, Biology, Chemistry, or related field
  • Or equivalent qualifications per CLIA regulations


Experience:



  • 8-10 years of clinical laboratory testing experience required
  • Blood Bank experience is required
  • Strong Core Lab experience highly preferred


Certifications:



  • ASCP or AMT certification preferred (open to eligible candidates)
  • State license if required by Alabama (not mandatory for technologists per current regulations)


Skills & Competencies

  • Ability to work independently and in a team environment
  • Strong attention to detail
  • Excellent communication and organizational skills
  • Computer proficiency; Cerner LIS experience is a strong plus
  • Ability to pass a standardized color vision screening
  • Flexibility to work overtime or other shifts as needed


Working Conditions

  • Fast-paced Blood Bank and Core Lab environment
  • Onsite role with independent workflow expectations


Additional Information

  • Medical Screening: TB Screen and Color Vision Screening required
  • Vaccinations: Hep B, TB, MMR, T-DAP, Flu, Varicella (COVID-19 not required)
