Position Title: Float Phlebotomist II

Location: Home Base - Naperville or Itasca, IL (Floating across multiple sites)

Duration: 3-Month Contract

Schedule:



  • Monday - Friday: 7:00 AM - 8:00 PM (8-hour shifts)
  • Rotating Saturdays (may include multiple consecutive weekends)
  • Occasional Sundays: 7:00 AM - 7:00 PM

    Work Type: Onsite (Float Role)


Position Summary:

The Float Phlebotomist II will support multiple Patient Service Centers (PSC) and IOP sites by performing specimen collection, processing, troubleshooting, and workflow support. This role requires flexibility, strong phlebotomy skills, and the ability to work independently across different locations.


Background / Context:

  • Coverage for two maternity leaves and two FMLA leaves
  • Potential for permanent conversion after 3 months


Key Responsibilities:

  • Perform blood draws, specimen labeling, centrifugation, and processing
  • Collect and store specimens according to established procedures
  • Explain venipuncture and specimen collection processes to patients clearly and professionally
  • Demonstrate proficiency with straight and butterfly needles
  • Review and verify physician orders and lab requisitions
  • Label, centrifuge, split, and freeze specimens as required
  • Ensure accuracy of test requisitions and specimen labeling
  • Package and prepare specimens for transport
  • Maintain specimen integrity through proper handling and temperature control
  • Comply with OSHA and DEP regulations
  • Attend required training sessions
  • Handle patient interactions, including phone inquiries and lab result communication
  • Perform blood draws, processing, drug screens, and paternity collections in PSC and IOP settings


Qualifications & Experience:

  • High School Diploma or GED
  • Minimum 6 months of venipuncture experience in a fast-paced lab or hospital setting
  • 2-4 years of overall experience preferred
  • Valid Phlebotomy certification (as required by state)
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite
  • Strong customer service and communication skills
  • Ability to work independently and handle difficult draws (hard sticks)
  • Flexible and adaptable to multiple locations


Work Environment & Physical Demands:

  • Standing for most of the shift (with lunch break)
  • Working across multiple PSC and IOP locations
  • Float role requiring:

    • Reliable vehicle
    • Valid driver's license
    • Good driving record


  • Mileage reimbursed from home base
  • 1-2 weeks of training


Additional Information:

  • Full-time: 40 hours/week
  • Daily volume: ~80 draws per day
  • Pediatric experience required (including newborns)
  • Vaccinations: MMR, TB required; Hep B offered (can decline)
  • Color vision test required
  • No pediatric experience = automatic disqualification
