Overview:

We are seeking aControl Room Shift Supervisor(CRSS)who will focus on the safe and efficient operation of allSpallation Neutron Source (SNS)accelerator systems. This positionresidesin the Accelerator Operations groupin the Operations, Integration, and Maintenance section of the Research Accelerator Division (RAD) within theNeutron Sciences DirectorateatOak Ridge National Laboratory(ORNL).

As part of our research team, you willbe responsible forthe safe and efficient operation of all SNS accelerator systems, including adherence to the SNS Operations Procedures Manual. The CRSS serves as the on-site safety coordinator during off-hour operations, supervises accelerator operations shift personnel, and implements approved operating schedules.

Major Duties/Responsibilities:

  • Oversees accelerator operations shift personnel and the operation of the SNS accelerator systems during testing, beamoperationsand maintenance.

  • Assistsin developing andimplementingintegrated system installation, testing, and operations plans.

  • Participates in accelerator operations support activities, including troubleshooting, planningforand performing maintenance and upgrades to accelerator subsystems, and developing accelerator control system programs.

  • Assistswith hiring operations personnel. Mentors the newly hired operations personnel towards qualification as defined in the SNS Control Room Accelerator Specialist Training Program. Provides work direction and supervision to operations personnel.

  • May provide work direction to technicians during troubleshooting maintenance and repair cycles.

  • Acts as the on-site safety coordinator during off-hour shift coverage. Responsible for coordinating response to incidents until relieved by the Laboratory Shift Superintendent Incident Commander.

  • Ensures safe operations of the accelerator systems within the approved operating envelope.

  • Understands, adheres to, and communicates to others, relevant portions of the SNS Operational Procedures Manual.

  • Responsible for understanding,following, and communicating ESH&Q requirements. Ensures that operations personnelfollowwith these requirements andmaintaintraining certifications.

  • Participates in developing, documenting, and implementing operations plans within budget and schedule.

  • Followsenvironmental, safety, health, and quality program requirements, including ISMS and SBMS.

Physical Requirements:

  • Occasional - Walking, standing, reaching both high and low levels.

  • Frequent - Speaking clearly, seeing near and far, color vision, and hearing - conversation and auditory alarms.

  • Constant - Sitting and finger movement.

  • Occasionally personnel protective equipment (PPE) will berequiredwhen making tours of the facility or whenoperatingelectrical breakers and disconnect switches. The PPE can be any orall ofthe following - Eye and hearing protection, covering for the head, arms, hands, fingers, fullbodyand skin protection.

Basic Qualifications:

  • A BS degreein physics or engineeringwithat least 5 years of relevantexperience. An equivalent combination of education and experience maybe consideredin lieu ofabachelor'sdegree (example: related training such as the Naval Nuclear Power Program).

  • Experience workingwith a team of engineers,scientists, technicians, operators, and crafts.

  • Abilityto work 12-hour shifts on a year-round, rotating schedule (includes day and night shifts) and respond to emergencies.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Two or more years of experience in operation of a particle accelerator and EPICS control systems.

  • Current qualification as an SNS Control Room Accelerator Specialist.

  • Experience in developing procedures, EDM screens, and training modules.

  • Experience in programming, scripts, and version control in a UNIX environment.

  • Ability to function well in a fast-paced research environment, set priorities toaccomplishmultiple tasks on time and adapt to evolving needs.
