The Opportunity

Our Commercial Marketing Analytics Team is growing to help support our non-regulated affiliate Natural Gas, Power and Emissions marketing and trading business. The team is responsible for fundamental, quantitative, and valuations support of the trading and origination groups.

In this hybrid, desk-facing role, you will combine natural gas fundamentals with tool and data development-building Python-based S&D workflows, Power BI dashboards, and a centralized vendor-data foundation to scale repeatable analytics.

We are seeking a self-motivated individual in Houston who will work collaboratively with the trading desks to provide natural gas supply and demand analytical support. This integral team member will convey that work into tangible and actionable reports and recommendations to ultimately increase (or decrease) conviction on market views in support of trading.

What you'll do

  • Conduct short to medium term analysis of North America and regional natural gas supply and demand fundamentals in support of our trading and origination activities.
  • Track fundamental drivers that are incorporated into models used to identify opportunities.
  • Maintain and run 3rd party production cost or capacity expansion models such as GPCM to help develop forward views of fundamentals and prices.
  • Own the daily execution, maintenance, and enhancement of the team's regional flow balances model used for day-to-day market views and decision support.
  • Provide in-depth commercial insight for trading decisions and strategies by leveraging a mosaic of information and analytics.
  • Work with other analyst teams to monitor developments in commodities that can have an influence on natural gas markets.
  • Provide timely ad hoc analyses for the trading desk, in response to changing market dynamics.
  • Create and maintain Power BI dashboards that translate S&D and flow views into decision-ready visuals for traders/originators, including refresh automation and validation of key drivers.
  • Develop repeatable Python workflows that generate daily balances and quickly quantify the impact of changes in weather, production, demand, LNG exports, and regional constraints
  • Participate in the evolution of the new business.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor's Degree preferably with a concentration in Business, Finance, Economics or Engineering.
  • 2-5 years direct analyst experience in an energy market trading environment. Experience with natural gas markets is preferred.
  • Proficiency with Python for analytics/automation and SQL for data extraction and transformation.
  • Experience building reports and data visualizations in Power BI (data modeling, measures, refresh, and publishing).
  • A natural curiosity about energy markets and the ability to develop forecasts that may be contrary to consensus.
  • Ability to operate in a time-sensitive environment, balancing daily deliverables with longer-term tool and data buildout.
  • Self-starter who is attracted to an entrepreneurial and start-up atmosphere in a rapidly growing business.

Preferred Skills

  • Strong Excel, VBA, SQL skills along with programing skills such as Python, R, or MATLAB.
  • Strong hands-on experience with Power BI.
  • Skilled in economic analysis and analytical reasoning.
  • Solid understanding of the exposure created through origination, and trading.
  • Extensive knowledge of data interaction or use of different data frameworks Ex: programming skills or direct database querying ability.
  • Experience managing dynamic workflow and multiple projects.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills.
  • Experience working with relational databases and cloud data environments to curate and deliver analytics-ready datasets; familiarity with collaboration tools for documentation/distribution.
  • Experience integrating and normalizing multiple third-party vendor datasets into a centralized repository (common identifiers, time alignment, and unit standardization).
  • Familiarity with major natural gas fundamentals data vendors such as S&P Global Platts, Energy Aspects, and Wood Mackenzie is an asset.
