- In this role you will work closely with metallurgical/materials
professionals in a full service metallurgical lab - Materials Engineering Lab (MEL) at the Linde Technology Center (LTC) in Tonawanda, NY; Activities of MEL involve a wide variety of technical service and development work to address safety and reliability issues encountered throughout the Linde group, including fast turnaround work to address field failures/issues as well as longer term development efforts - You will work closely with development specialists and professionals to support technical service jobs and development activities
- Prepare of a wide variety of metal and non-metal test samples, typical sample preparation techniques include rough and precision cutting, metallurgical polishing, and etching
- Maintain equipment used for sample preparation (i.e. saws, polishing equipment, etc.) and perform basic optical microscopy and microhardness testing
- Operate and help maintain the MEL chemical analysis laboratory equipment used to characterize a wide range of non-metallic materials used within Linde and Linde customer processes including Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), accelerated rate calorimetry (ARC), differential temperature/thermal gravimetric analysis (DTA/TGA), bomb calorimetry, etc.
- Operate and maintain equipment for flammability testing of metals in oxygen, this includes preparation of metal test samples and reporting of results
- Write basic lab reports to document results for oxygen compatibility testing of non-metallic and metallic materials, assist with design, fabrication, and operation of custom material and component test equipment, as needed for project work
- Also, you will write and maintain safe operation procedures (SOPs) for MEL equipment
What makes you great
- Associate's or Bachelor's degree in a technical / engineering field required with more than five (5+) years' experience relevant to job activities listed above
- Basic operation of chemical lab instrumentation such as FTIR, Metallurgical lab experience, including sample preparation (mounting, polishing, etching) and material hardness testing, laboratory furnace operation, experience working with high pressure oxygen, basic skills in CAD and PLC programming and instrumentation / data acquisition experience preferred
- Demonstrated experience in the safe operation of shop and laboratory equipment
- You have good mechanical aptitude and ability to troubleshoot test equipment
- Excellent interpersonal and communication skills
- Ability to manage data (excel spreadsheets) and write basic reports is required in this role
- Basic computer skills including Microsoft Office Suite
- Ability to travel up
to 5% of the time (domestic)
