Position Summary:

The Senior Mechanical Engineer is one of our Engineering Department's hands-on technical lead designers. This role is accountable for code-compliant, buildable, well-coordinated permit and construction documents, our designs get built. You won't just issue drawings; you'll watch your designs get installed, started up, and perform, giving you direct feedback from the field. This role is responsible for delivering code-compliant, buildable, and well-coordinated designs from concept through issued-for-construction (IFC). The position works closely with project teams and the field, providing technical leadership, QA/QC oversight, and mentorship to junior engineers.

Key Responsibilities:

Design Leadership & Execution

  • Lead mechanical design from basis-of-design through permit and IFC deliverables
  • Establish system selection, equipment sizing, and control strategies
  • Design and troubleshoot air-side and water-side HVAC systems
  • Ensure compliance with California and local building/energy codes

QA/QC & Standards

  • Oversee quality of calculations, sizing, layouts, schedules, and details
  • Perform coordination and constructability reviews to ensure buildable designs

Coordination & Field Support

  • Collaborate with project managers, clients, and contractors on design solutions
  • Participate in site walks and existing conditions assessments
  • Support construction with submittals, RFIs, and design clarifications

Mentorship & Team Support

  • Guide and mentor junior engineers on technical skills and design standards
  • Coordinate work across internal and external engineering resources
  • Provide feedback on team development, tools, and process improvements

Minimum Qualifications:

  • 7-10 years of experience in commercial HVAC/mechanical design or construction
  • Bachelor's degree in Engineering (or equivalent experience)
  • PE license preferred
  • Strong knowledge of HVAC systems, equipment, and installation practices
  • Proficiency in load calculation software (e.g., HAP, Trace 700, EnergyPro)
  • Proficiency in AutoCAD; Revit preferred
  • Solid understanding of California and local building codes
  • Strong communication skills and ability to collaborate across teams
