The IACUC Administrator provides programmatic leadership, regulatory oversight, and strategic direction for the Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC). Under the guidance of the Institutional Official, this role ensures institutional compliance with all applicable federal regulations, accreditation standards, and guidance documents, including the Animal Welfare Act/Regulations and the Guide for the Care and Use of Laboratory Animals. The Administrator serves as the subject matter expert for animal welfare regulations and accreditation and oversees the operational activities of the IACUC Coordinator.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Programmatic Oversight & Compliance

  • Serve as the institutional expert on animal research regulations and standards, including:
    • Guide for the Care and Use of Laboratory Animals
    • Animal Welfare Act and Regulations (USDA)
    • PHS Policy (OLAW)
    • AAALAC International standards
  • Ensure the IACUC fulfills all roles, responsibilities, and authorities outlined in applicable regulations and guidance.
  • Monitor regulatory changes and interpret requirements for institutional implementation.
  • Develop, maintain, and revise IACUC policies, SOPs, guidance documents, and templates to ensure ongoing compliance.
  • Working with the Institutional Official, conduct periodic programmatic self-assessments and gap analyses to identify compliance risks and improvement opportunities.

IACUC Governance & Leadership

  • Provide strategic direction and support to the IACUC Chair and committee members.
  • Advise the IACUC on regulatory interpretation, precedent, and best practices.
  • Ensure consistency, fairness, and regulatory compliance in protocol review processes and IACUC decision-making.
  • Lead semiannual program reviews and facility inspections across production facilities.
  • Serve as a liaison between the IACUC, Attending Veterinarian, Institutional Official, and other compliance programs.

Accreditation & External Reporting

  • Lead development, maintenance, and updates of all AAALAC Program Descriptions.
  • Serve as the primary institutional contact for AAALAC International.
  • Coordinate and oversee preparation for AAALAC site visits, including documentation review, interviews, and corrective action responses.
  • Lead preparation for and response to regulatory inspections and accreditation activities (e.g., USDA, OLAW, AAALAC).
  • Reviews all annual and prepares ad hoc reports submitted to:
    • USDA
    • OLAW
    • AAALAC International
  • Ensure report accuracy, consistency, and timely submission.

Supervision & Team Leadership

  • Provide direct supervision, mentorship, and performance management for the IACUC Coordinator.
  • Establish workflows, priorities, and quality standards for IACUC administrative operations.
  • Review and approve committee materials, correspondence, and official records prepared by the Coordinator.

Education & Institutional Support

  • Develop and deliver training for animal care and use employees, IACUC members, and institutional leadership related to IACUC responsibilities and regulatory requirements.
  • Provide consultative support to staff regarding protocol and SOP development, regulatory expectations, and compliance strategies.
  • Support clear and consistent internal communication related to IACUC decisions and requirements.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree required; advanced degree preferred.
  • Certified Professional IACUC Administrator (CPIA) required.
  • Minimum 5-7 years of progressive experience in IACUC administration or animal research compliance.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of USDA, OLAW, and AAALAC requirements.
  • Experience leading accreditation activities and regulatory inspections.
  • Ability to travel for AAALAC site visits as needed.
  • Strong leadership, analytical, and communication skills.

*This position could be offered at different levels for candidates who qualify with a combination of advanced levels of education and/or years of experience. The salary range will adjust along with the level of the role to match the person's relevant experience and/or education level.
