Position Summary: JMT's Washington DC Traffic Team is seeking a Traffic Design Engineer to be responsible for engineering design, analysis, and studies using knowledge of general engineering principles and practices to interpret, organize, execute, and coordinate assignments.

JMT's Washington DC office is a fast-growing and dynamic office involved in major projects in Washington DC and the surrounding areas. The selected candidate will work with a team of experienced project managers and professional engineers on exciting, multimodal transportation projects.

Compensation for this position is $85,280.00 - $89,440.00 annually, commensurate with experience, education and certifications. The provided range is a good faith estimate based on the requirements described within the job description. We notice that we receive a wide variety of applicants and recognize that the person selected may be less experienced or more experienced. If so, the actual salary range may vary from the estimate provided.

Essential Functions and Responsibilities



  • Perform engineering tasks in the traffic engineering field through application of relevant design criteria, standards, and processes
  • Prepare traffic signal, signing, pavement marking, lighting, and ITS design plans
  • Prepare maintenance of traffic (MOT), transportation management plans (TMP), and detour plans for design projects
  • Develop construction cost estimates and specifications
  • Perform traffic safety and traffic analysis studies
  • Perform traffic analysis using software such as Synchro
  • Conduct multimodal studies including bus, pedestrian, and bicycle studies
  • Analyze survey reports, maps, drawings, blueprints, aerial photography and other topographical or geologic data to plan project
  • Perform field reviews of traffic operations
  • Coordinate with internal team members to ensure project completion by the defined deadline and established quality

Required Skills

  • Proficient computer skills in Microsoft Outlook, Word, Excel, and PowerPoint
  • Written and oral communication skills

Required Experience

  • Bachelor's degree in civil engineering or a related field from ABET-accredited engineering program
  • 0 - 4 years' experience


Preferred Experience



  • Engineer-in-training certification
  • Related experience
  • Experience working MicroStation ORD
  • Experience working with local clients in the DC metropolitan area


Working Conditions

Work is performed within a general office environment 95% of the time. Work is generally sedentary in nature but may require occasional standing and walking. Lighting and temperature are adequate and there are no hazardous or unpleasant conditions caused by noise, dust, etc. within the office environment.

Field work is required on occasion where work may be conducted outside in heat/cold, wet/humid, and dry/arid conditions. Some lifting (up to 25 lbs) may be required as needed.
