The Role

QuidelOrtho is looking for a Engineering Intern, Technical Operationsthat wants to spend their summer working towards our mission: Changing Lives, One Test at a Time. Interns will have the opportunity to gain knowledge and develop their skills all while contributing to key company projects and initiatives. Our team will help students apply their educational background and broaden their knowledge base within their role and learn more about working in the medical device/biotech industry. Interns will work with a mentor(s) on a guided and impactful project and will be able to collaborate with and be part of a supportive and dedicated team.

This Internship is a full-time (40 hours per week) paid program for 10-12 weeks.

Session 1: June 15th through August 31st

Session 2: July 6th through September 31st

This role will work on key projects related to test fixture development and documentation, production process improvement and cost down support, compliance to standards, and implementation of Engineering changes.

This position is onsite in Rochester, NY.

The Responsibilities
  • Project to improve production First Pass Yield and reduce variability on new product assemblies. Value stream map the manufacturing process to identify areas for process flow improvement, material handling optimization, and reduce cycle time. Use continuous improvement tools to identify and implement process improvements.

  • Provide Engineering support to Equipment Manufacturing Operations team. Assist with problem troubleshooting, root cause identification, and requalification requirements.

  • Assist with test fixture development and documentation. Seek out existing test fixture configuration, risks, and spare part needs. Create, execute, and implement test fixture qualifications.

  • Support compliance team efforts to meet new product and part standards.

  • Assist team with Engineering changes, supplier change requests, and change management processes.

  • Support part and process cost down initiatives.

  • Prepare presentations, reports, or documentation as needed.

  • Participate in team meetings and provide input where applicable.

  • Perform administrative duties and support staff as needed.

  • Learn company tools, processes, and workflows.

  • Perform other work-related duties as assigned.

Job Deliverables
  • The intern will present a PowerPoint presentation on his/her work to a cross-functional group.

The Individual

Required:

  • Currently enrolled in a bachelor's degree program majoring in Industrial, Electrical, Mechanical, or related field.

  • Some knowledge of technical areas including schematics, configuration control, documentation, electro-mechanical troubleshooting, electrostatic discharge, and test protocols.

  • Some knowledge of mechanical drawings and tolerancing, materials, software, experience with electro-mechanical assemblies and test fixtures.

  • Training in Operations concepts and ability to learn new computer-based systems quickly.

  • Demonstrated communication skills and ability to work in a team environment.

Preferred:

  • Continuous improvement training in lean, kaizen, and problem-solving methodologies.

Other Requirements or Restrictions:

  • Must be at least 18 years old.

  • Must be currently enrolled as a full-time student in a Bachelor's program in the Fall Semester 2024 at an accredited university or college.

  • Student must start on June 15th or July 6th. Must be able to complete a consecutive 10-12 week internship.

  • Must have work authorization in the United States at the time of hire, and maintain ongoing work authorization during employment

  • Minimum GPA: 3.0

  • Minimum Year in School : Rising Junior or Senior

  • Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook)

  • Adobe Acrobat

The Work Environment

The work environment characteristics are representative of a manufacturing, laboratory, or warehouse environment and include handling of viral and bacterial hazards, potentially hazardous chemicals, as well as infectious or potentially infectious bodily fluids, tissues, and samples. Up to 75% of the time you will be, standing, walking or sitting for extended periods of time. Ability to lift up to 50 lbs. Flexible work hours to meet project deadlines.

Salary Transparency

The salary range for this position takes into account a wide range of factors including education, experience, knowledge, skills, geography, and abilities of the candidate, in addition to internal equity and alignment with market data. The salary range for current Freshman, rising Sophomore is 18.00/hour; Sophomore, rising Junior is 20/hour; Junior, rising senior is $23.00/hour to $26.00/hour; Senior, enrolled in school for fall 2024 is 25.00/hour to 28.00/hour. At QuidelOrtho, compensation decisions are dependent on the facts and circumstances of each case.
