Essential Job Duties
Note: This position is open only to currently enrolled NC State University graduate students who are in good academic standing.

Position Summary:
The Teaching Assistant (TA) will support classroom instruction and learning for students with intellectual and developmental disabilities ( IDD) enrolled in the Elevate program. The TA will co-teach and lead instructional sessions, ensure students are receiving academic accommodations, provide modifications to assignments and content as needed, and reinforce learning across core college subjects, vocational preparation, and life skills development. The TA will also assist in evaluating students' academic performance in Elevate program courses.

Key Responsibilities:


Teaching Support


  • Co-teach or facilitate Elevate program-specific courses in areas such as:
  • College Readiness Skills: Support students by providing supplemental and explicit instruction to support acquisition of content.
  • Academic Support Strategies: Support course material development and delivery of instruction to equip students with the academic tools and strategies needed to complete and comprehend objectives in their NC State courses
  • Career Development Skills: Deliver instruction on job readiness, resume building, interview practice, career research, and workplace behaviors.
  • Life Skills: Teach topics related to independent living (e.g., budgeting, healthy living, cleaning routines, navigation, transportation).
  • Personal Development: Facilitate sessions on self-advocacy, interpersonal communication, self-regulation, and goal setting and attainment.
  • Develop lesson plans and modify materials based on individual students' needs, in consultation with instructor of record
  • Apply Universal Design for Learning (UDL) principles and hands-on activities to support student engagement.
  • Track and report on student progress and adapt strategies accordingly.
  • Implement instructional strategies and provide individualized support to address the learning needs of students with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD).
  • Support students enrolled in general education or audit-based college courses, including supplemental instruction and assignment assistance.

Minimum Experience/Education
A high school diploma combined with substantial experience in event coordination/administration, demonstrating strong organizational and planning skills

  • Minimum 3.0 GPA and in good academic standing
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills
  • Work experience as a teacher, instructor, or counselor
  • Demonstrated ability to explain concepts clearly and adapt teaching methods to meet unique learner needs
  • Interest in education, disability studies, or inclusive teaching practices
  • Strong organizational and time management skills
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint) and Google Workspace (Docs, Sheets, Slides)
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively within a team
  • Commitment to supporting students with intellectual and developmental disabilities

Preferred Years Experience, Skills, Training, Education

Preferred:


  • Experience with data collection, managing databases, digital communication tools, and other administrative tasks
  • Experience with event planning

  • Experience working with individuals with disabilities

  • Background in education, counseling, social work, or related fields

  • Familiarity with inclusive education

  • Experience with providing instructional support, managing databases, and effectively using digital communication tools
