| Posting Summary |
Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey, is seeking a Post-Doctoral Associate in the Department of Medicine within the New Jersey Medical School (
NJMS).
Under the direction of the Principal Investigator, the Post-Doctoral Associate will conduct genetic, microbiological, biochemical and animal studies to identify compounds that inhibit or kill Mycobacterium tuberculosis and to better understand their targets and mechanisms of action. The Fellow will also investigate the cellular mechanisms of drug synergy in M. tuberculosis.
Among the key duties of this position are the following:
- Cultures pathogenic viruses and quantitates using plaque and TCID 50 assays.
- Maintains viral stocks and confirms strain types by sequencing.
- Performs viral drug susceptibility tests.
- Tests novel viral and bacterial diagnostic assays.
- Assists in animal infection and treatment studies of both viral and bacterial pathogens.

- Preferred experience includes independent design and conduction of genetic, microbiological, and metabolomic studies, experience performing unsupervised work in the BSLIII on M. tuberculosis and M. tuberculosis-infected mice, and ability to analyze transcriptional and metabolomic experiments.
- Additional experience in biochemistry preferred.

| Physical Demands and Work Environment |
PHYSICAL DEMAND:
- This position involves prolonged standing, walking and sitting, as well as use of laboratory equipment.
- Must perform complex procedures and demonstrate manual dexterity. Some stooping, reaching, climbing and bending.
- Occasional lifting of 20 pounds to a height of 6 feet.
- Hearing and speech capabilities necessary to communicate with other researchers and staff in person, on the telephone and by e-mail.
- Vision capable of viewing gauges, computer monitors, charts, forms, text and numbers for prolonged periods.
WORK ENVIRONMENT:
- Included is training in BSL3 practices, and willingness to work with virulent and drug-resistant M. tuberculosis.
- Must be available to work flexible hours including weekends and holidays when necessary to meet deadlines.
- Must be willing to work with small and large animals.
