Primary Purpose of Organizational Unit
The UNC Adams School of Dentistry Department of Pediatric Dentistry and Dental Public Health provides oral health care for individuals from infancy through adolescence and promotes the prevention of oral disease. The Pediatric Dentistry discipline is committed to the treatment of children, adolescents and special needs patients while balancing teaching, scholarship, patient care, research and professional service activities.
Position Summary
Patient Navigator/Scheduler - Pediatric Dentistry (Predoctoral Student Clinic)
The Patient Navigator provides essential support to patient relations and clinical operations within the Pediatric Dentistry clinic, with primary responsibility for the predoctoral student clinic and backup coverage for graduate clinics. This position is critical to maintaining continuity of patient care and ensuring that clinical educational experiences align with the competencies and clinical milestones required for successful program completion.

Serving as a central liaison for the predoctoral clinic, this role independently manages patient care coordination and appointment scheduling, using clear and timely communication with patients, families, caregivers, social services, and faculty via EPIC/MyChart, phone, email, and traditional mail. Key responsibilities include assigning patients to student providers during clinical rotations, triaging emergency calls, and advocating for patient access to appropriate services.

In addition to scheduling and navigation, the position provides professional front-desk and telephone support, assists with Graduate Program screening appointments, and maintains accurate documentation for patient assignments and clinical progress. Spanish interpretation services are also provided to support the clinic's diverse patient population. This role directly supports the clinical training of over 175 predoctoral dental students and is essential to the operational efficiency, educational mission, and patient satisfaction within the clinic.
Minimum Education and Experience Requirements
High school diploma or equivalency; or demonstrated possession of the competencies necessary to perform the work.
Management Preferences

  • Previous experience in a dental or healthcare setting, particularly in roles involving patient scheduling, insurance verification, or clinical coordination.
  • Prior training or hands-on experience with EPIC and NC Tracks.
  • Working knowledge of dental terminology, procedures, and workflows.
  • Bilingual fluency in Spanish is highly preferred
