The Position

The Opportunity

The Senior Director, Access Business Partner will serve as a senior leader within the Policy, Evidence & Access Strategy (PEAS) organization in leading and orchestrating the development and implementation of US market access strategies for identified TAs/Squads. This role will report into an Executive Director Access Business Partner (and sit on the PEAS LT) with a dotted line into the respective TA/Squad Lead. The scope of this position may expand to include additional Squad/TA focus as organization evolves.

While the final TA alignment is to be determined. Genentech markets and develops medicines across a number of disease areas in Oncology, Ophthalmology, NI, Resp, Rare Diseases, Immunology and CVRM

As a key member of the respective Squad(s), this individual is accountable for shaping US access strategy, providing input into clinical development decisions and evidence generation plans (both US and global) to enable greater US access and competitiveness for the aligned squad/TA, building and bringing a compelling total value proposition to customers, ensuring pricing and contracting strategies support brand access goals, and representing cross-portfolio access implications, priorities, and scaling considerations (including liaising with Access Solutions and bringing AS perspective to Squad as needed).

This individual will have cross-functional accountability and heavy collaboration with leaders across PEAS, Contract and Channel Management (CCM), Evidence Generation, Medical Affairs, Marketing, Customer Engagement leadership including National Account teams, Access Solutions, Global teams, key customers, Legal and Squad in order to drive access-related decision making and facilitate implementation.

Key Job Responsibilities

Market Access Strategy Development and Implementation:

  • Fully accountable for the development and implementation of a sophisticated, end-to-end, US Market Access Strategy and associated brand access objectives/ goals across functions to maximize net revenue for in-line products and new launches (including the evolution of key payer/provider/SP/distributor/GPO discounts, rebates, distribution model and related services, etc., as appropriate)

    • Accountable for the Integrated Access Plan, enabling segment-specific and functional tactical planning

    • Responsible for shaping the overall market access strategy, assessing risk and opportunities, developing, implementing, and measuring market access strategies for products and therapeutic areas

    • Support shaping TA Policy and Pipeline and Product Development decisions related to TA product access issues

  • Ensures that Squads have the access insight, POV, and resources they need to succeed

  • Engages with external customers and Customer Engagement (CE) teams to unlock the value of access decisions and ensure strategic alignment with field partners

  • Provide expert access input to clinical development decisions, evidence generation plans and product development plans

  • Scale access learnings across the portfolio

Cross-functional Collaboration:

  • Lead, orchestrate, and heavily influence TA-specific access priorities for cross-functional Access pod (PCD, Marketing, Evidence Generation, AS, etc.) to build a holistic access and customer segment strategy for the therapeutic area(s), and embed into commercial strategy for in-line products and new launches

  • Partner with Evidence Generation on identifying evidence gaps to address existing or potential future access barriers or support competitive value positioning

  • As needed, partner with GPAA, GPF and broader organization to identify and take action as appropriate in response to emerging patient support program trends (e.g., AFM, Co-pay card acc/max)

Contracting Strategy and Optimization:

  • Accountable to translate Brand/Squad access goals to PCD partners to ensure pricing, contracting and distribution strategies align with Squad goals/needs

  • Decides which contracting opportunities appear before Squad and ensures net revenue implications over 3-year period and any contract effectiveness analysis communicated to squad at time of decision

    • Assess payer contracting engagement strategy, and/or manage access-related issues

    • Identify and support strategies to navigate payer and provider coverage complexities

Decision-Making and Leadership:

  • Engage in annual budget planning, work with PAA leadership to make access trade-off decisions, and align on outside spend priorities in service of meeting Squad/brand goals

  • Drives decisive and assertive decisions at Squad after seeking and incorporating insights from access stakeholders and customers.

    • Accountable for ensuring optimal contracting strategy through execution and learnings shared back with Squad and other Access leaders

    • Assists with background / context / analytics on concession-related issues/requests coming from customers/CE to allow for efficient squad assessment and decisions

  • Decides when to escalate identified tensions to USLT or other Portfolio Governance body when TA/Squad priorities and Customer Segment strategies are in conflict

Customer-Voice:

  • Bring in the patient and end customer POV as it relates to the reimbursement process; involve Access Solutions and understand how best to utilize patient services

  • Identify and prioritize evidence generation needs that align with customer needs and enhance product differentiation, and collaborate with Evidence Generation to shape evidence generation priorities.

  • Leads the planning process, is accountable for, and brings compelling total value propositions to customers, and work collaboratively with CE to focus the articulation of Value Stories for different customer segments

Who you are:

  • Bachelor's Degree in relevant discipline (advanced degree preferred)

  • 12+ years of relevant work experience in pharmaceutical industry, with a focus on managed care

  • 8+ years of experience in Market Access function and demonstrated leadership experience within the function

  • Broad and diversified US Market Access experience to include multiple therapeutic areas with deep expertise in respective disease area and developing and executing access-related initiatives

  • Proven success in managing high performing teams, while acting as a coach and mentor to team members

  • Expert in pricing, contracting, strategy and policy strategies within US segment landscape with significant experience in developing and executing marketing and access strategies

  • Proven ability to guide messaging development and build alliances with senior stakeholders and external customers

  • Ability to lead, mobilize, and successfully collaborate with and influence cross-functional teams and deploy resources with an enterprise mindset

  • Deep understanding of the role of evidence generation in access, and experience collaborating with evidence generation teams

  • Creativity and resilience in unstructured problem solving to build structure across squad access priorities and proactively identify problems and generate solutions across a complex and changing environment

  • Advanced PowerPoint and Excel skills

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills with an ability to effectively present to and engage with a wide range of audiences

  • Excellent negotiator that can create win-win solutions

Preferred qualifications:

  • Payer/Provider/Other key customer segment engagement/negotiation experience

  • Experience working with evidence generation teams to create effective value stories

  • Global engagement experience

This position is based out of our South San Francisco, California Genentech Campus and requires an onsite presence

The expected salary range for this position based on the primary location of South San Francisco, California is $218,000/yr to $404,800/yr. Actual pay will be determined based on experience, qualifications, geographic location, and other job-related factors permitted by law. A discretionary annual bonus may be available based on individual and Company performance. This position also qualifies for the benefits detailed at the link provided below.
