Summary:
The Wound Skin Care Nurse who sub-specialize in wound, and continence of care are responsible for the treatment and management of disorders affecting the gastrointestinal, genitourinary, and integumentary (digestive, urinary, and skin) systems. As such, their scope of care typically involves treatment of ostomies, stomas, acute and chronic wounds, and urinary and fecal incontinence. Wound, ostomy, and continence nurses provide a multidisciplinary approach to treatment across a continuum of care.

Responsibilities:
Key customers are patients, physicians, peers, clinical staff, and all other departments. Assures friendly, helpful, and courteous response to all customers. Performs duties and conducts interpersonal relationships in a manner to project a positive image of the department and hospital. Insures that contacts with other health care members is friendly helpful and courteous.

EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS
Graduate of an accredited school of nursing. BSN preferred. BSN within 3 years of employment required.

PROFESSIONAL EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENT
Two years relevant RN experience. Experience with Wound Continence Care preferred.

LICENSURE/REGISTRATION/CERTIFICATION
Current licensure to practice as Registered Nurse in the state of North Carolina.
BLS certification required.
Specialty certification by Association of Wound Treatment Associate (WTA) within 1 year of employment.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES REQUIREMENTS
Ability to demonstrate initiative, teamwork, and flexibility required.
Effective communication, both verbally and in writing.
Excellent organizational skills with ability to prioritize and coordinate patient care activities.
Effective interpersonal, communication and observation skills are essential. Understanding of patient care needs according to developmental stages for various age groups.
High level skills in critical thinking and assessment related to vascular access device selection and placement preferred.

WORK ENVIRONMENT
Exposure to blood borne pathogens, airborne pathogens, and other infectious diseases requiring the use of protective equipment.
Possible exposure to other hazards, such as electrical, radiation, toxic waste, chemical hazards based on the departments.
Possible exposure to conditions, such as fumes, noxious odors, dusts, mists, gases, or poor ventilation.
Continuous use of medical/clinical equipment such as IV pumps, monitors, ventilators, oxygen tanks, patient beds, etc.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENT
Standing, sitting, walking, and working throughout the shift. Lifting, pulling, turning, and pushing patients daily. Ability to use appropriate Safe-Patient Handling equipment. Visual acuity, auditory, and verbal skills necessary. Stressful work periods and rotating shifts.
