The Position The Opportunity

As a Scientist II in the Sequencing Workflows and Applications team at Roche, you are at the forefront of developing next-generation sequencing (NGS) solutions that directly impact human health. Are you creative, driven, and want to help build novel reagent and assay workflows from concept to launch?

In this lab-based role at Roche Sequencing Solutions, you are a key contributor to our product development pipeline, focusing on the entire NGS ecosystem. You will apply your expertise in nucleic acid technologies to design, execute, and troubleshoot experiments, playing a vital part in creating the tools that power genomic and epigenomic discovery. In this position you are also:

  • Driving Assay Development: Designing, optimizing, and validating NGS workflows, with a focus on library preparation, target enrichment, and sequencing applications for human disease research.

  • Executing Complex Experiments: Independently performing hands-on work, including nucleic acid extraction, library construction, and operating Illumina sequencing platforms (NovaSeq, MiSeq, etc.).

  • Analyzing and Interpreting Data: Taking ownership of your projects by analyzing experimental data, drawing meaningful conclusions, and presenting clear, actionable insights to guide next steps.

  • Innovating and Troubleshooting: Applying your deep knowledge of molecular biology to proactively identify technical challenges, troubleshoot complex assay-related issues, and develop innovative solutions.

  • Collaborating and Communicating: Presenting your findings and project updates to internal teams and cross-functional stakeholders. Training new team members and contributing to a collaborative R&D environment.

  • Ensuring Quality and Rigor: Meticulously documenting experimental methods, materials, and results in an electronic lab notebook. Authoring and implementing standard operating procedures (SOPs) to ensure high-quality, reproducible results.

Who You Are Required Qualifications:
  • You hold a Bachelor's degree with 2+ years of relevant industry experience. A master's degree and 4+ years of relevant industry experience are preferred.

  • The experience that is considered relevant for this position is: hands-on expertise in NGS assay development with a proven track record in applications such as methylation sequencing (WGBS, EM-seq, etc.), WGS, Exome, or RNA-Seq. Assay design, optimization, validation, and statistical data analysis. Cell-free in vitro transcription/translation (IVTT) assays.

Behaviors, competencies, and qualities of the ideal applicant.

  • Direct experience operating, troubleshooting, and maintaining Illumina sequencing platforms (e.g., NovaSeq, HiSeq, NextSeq, MiSeq).

  • Proficiency in data analysis and visualization using tools such as Python, R, or JMP.

  • Familiarity with other genomic analysis technologies, such as microarrays or qPCR, for quality control and validation is a plus.

  • Experience working in a regulated product development environment is highly desirable.

  • Excellent problem-solving skills and the ability to work both independently and as part of a team.Strong communication and presentation skills, with the ability to convey complex scientific concepts clearly.

The expected salary range for this position, based on the primary location of Pleasanton, CA, is 65,500.00- 121,700.00 USD Annual. Actual pay will be determined based on experience, qualifications, geographic location, and other job-related factors permitted by law. A discretionary annual bonus may be available based on individual and Company performance. This position also qualifies for the benefits detailed at the link provided below.
