Description

Are you interested in changing science fiction into reality for our national security in space?

Are you passionate about creating algorithms for autonomous spacecraft operations?

Do you want to work with brilliant colleagues on challenging problems while still having work-life balance?

If so, we're looking for someone like you on our team at APL!

We are seeking an intellectually curious and technically excellent Decision Analytics & Applied Mathematics Analyst to support mission-driven work in the space domain. You'll develop novel analytical methods, formulate optimization and decision-making models, and contribute to real-world applications in space systems, space situational awareness (SSA), onboard autonomy, and mission-level planning.

As a Decision Analytics & Applied Mathematics Analyst you will......

  • Develop models and algorithms for decision-making under uncertainty applied to space-centric missions (e.g., SSA, satellite autonomy, space asset resilience).
  • Formulate and solve mathematical problems involving Bayesian inference, stochastic processes, optimization, and reinforcement learning.
  • Translate theory into practice by developing software tools and simulations that support mission planning, real-time operations, or predictive analytics.
  • Contribute to the design of analytical frameworks and AI-enabled decision support systems for space-based applications.
  • Collaborate with subject matter experts in astrodynamics, sensing, autonomy, and space systems engineering to integrate decision analytics into broader mission solutions.
  • Present technical results to APL leadership and external government sponsors and contribute to reports and white papers.

Qualifications

You meet our minimum qualifications for the job if you...

  • Have a Master's degree in Applied Mathematics, Statistics, Physics, Computer Science, Aerospace Engineering, Operations Research, or a related quantitative field with 5+ years of experience.
  • Demonstrated experience in one or more of the following:
    • Probabilistic modeling and Bayesian inference
    • Decision theory and utility-based analysis
    • Optimization (deterministic/stochastic/dynamic programming)
    • Simulation and modeling of complex systems
  • Strong proficiency in scientific programming (Python, Julia, MATLAB, or C++) with experience building analytical software tools.
  • Can acquire a Secret clearance by your start date and can ultimately acquire TS/SCI level clearance. If selected, you will be subject to a government security clearance investigation and must meet the requirements for access to classified information. Eligibility requirements include U.S. citizenship.

You'll go above and beyond our minimum requirements if you...

  • Have a Ph.D. in a relevant technical field.
  • Have experience applying decision science, optimization, or inference methods to space applications, such as:
    • Tasking space-based sensors or satellites
    • Planning and scheduling autonomous space missions
    • Space traffic management or conjunction assessment
    • Modeling adversarial behavior or strategic interactions in contested space environments
  • Familiarity with SSA systems, space control concepts, or satellite operations.
  • Experience working with DoD or Intelligence Community mission sponsors.
  • Have a TS/SCI clearance
