Position Description:

The Rehabilitation Counseling program at the University of Iowa is looking to add a dynamic scholar to its #4-ranked, CACREP-accredited program. The College of Education at Iowa is making major investments in Counselor Education to create a faculty group who will lead Iowa and the nation in addressing critical clinical rehabilitation and vocational issues impacting people with disabilities. The successful candidate will be a member of our interdisciplinary department of scholars, carrying out the department mission of developing exceptional, ethical, and compassionate mental health counselors and counselor educators to work in communities and schools as clinicians, advocates, catalysts for hope, facilitators of opportunity, and agents of change.

Position

The Department of Counselor Education at the University of Iowa invites applications for one open-rank, tenure-track, academic-year faculty position in the Rehabilitation Counseling program to begin August 19, 2026.

We seek professionals with evidence of significant accomplishments in research that impacts the employment of youth and adults who have a disability. This individual should demonstrate:

a) The ability to produce empirically driven and practically relevant research in the impact of disability across the life span and/or Rehabilitation Counseling

b) Skills in effective teaching and clinical supervision.

c) A commitment to professional service that advances the research, training, and clinical work intended to improve the lives of persons with disabilities; and

d) A commitment to the counseling profession as demonstrated by, for example, conference presentations, lectures, and professional memberships.

The successful candidate will join a research and training partnership with Counselor Education and Supervision doctoral program, School Counseling, and the Clinical Mental Health Counseling MA program to teach graduate-level courses. This individual will have the opportunity to join in partnership with the Scanlan Center for School Mental Health. The Rehabilitation Counseling program, following the College of Education trends, has strong department, college, university, and clinical community support, and is committed to an environment that values multiple perspectives and collegiality. The preferred candidate will have a strong commitment to a student-centered approach and will be experienced in implementation of CACREP (Council for Accreditation of Counseling and Related Educational Programs) accreditation standards in Rehabilitation Counseling.

Job duties include:

1. Serving as a core faculty member in the Master's in Rehabilitation Counseling.

2. Teaching courses in the Rehabilitation Counseling program and within the Department of Counselor Education in areas consistent with the candidate's interests and department needs,

3. Conducting a program of research and publication in an area of specialization,

4. Seeking and administering external grants for research, training, and service,

5. Advising students at the master's and doctoral levels,

6. Supervising doctoral students' dissertations, and

7. Develop as a future leader/coordinator of the MA program in Rehabilitation Counseling.

Education Requirement:

By August 2026, prospective candidates must have an earned doctorate in Rehabilitation Counselor Education, Counselor Education, or Counselor Education and Supervision from a CACREP-accredited program.



Required Qualifications:

1. Concentration or specialization in Rehabilitation, Vocational, or Career Counseling.

2. Evidence of potential for scholarly productivity, including publications in recognized rehabilitation, vocational, disability, counseling, career development, counselor education, or related journals.

3. Evidence and/or potential for attracting external funding.

4. Experience in teaching undergraduate/graduate courses and supervising students in practica/internships.

5. Be a Certified Rehabilitation Counselor [CRC], National Certified Counselor [NCC], and/or Certified Clinical Mental Health Counselor [CCMHC] or be certification eligible.

Desirable Qualifications:

1. Established teaching, research, and service record reflective of expected requirements for appointment at the rank of associate or full professor, respectively.

2. Success in procuring competitive national funding for training, employment, research, and/or implementation of interventions.

3. Experience teaching, supervising, and coordinating in a CACREP-accredited graduate program.

4. Experience in state/federal/tribal, or veteran administration, or corrections, or forensic rehabilitation service delivery.

5. Experience with applied clinical research.

6. Experience contributing to a welcoming and respectful environment.
