Primary Purpose of Department
The Belk College of Business is dedicated to helping undergraduate students discover, plan, and achieve their academic and career goals, while learning to become 21st century business leaders. This individual is committed to engaging students in personal development and self-assessment, teaching students how to effectively manage their academic success and supporting students through the exploration of their major and career development plans. Students are expected to develop academic and career plans consistent with their interests, abilities, and aspirations and to utilize available resources to achieve their long-term professional goals. This individual ensures that students have access to accurate and relevant information so that they can take initiative and responsibility for their success. This individual upholds University and Belk College standards in a professional and respectful manner that reflects an appreciation for students from all backgrounds.
Primary Purpose of Position

Summary of Position Responsibilities
Individual Assistance: The Academic Advisor will assume advising responsibilities for any assigned student wherein the role is placed at UNC Charlotte. This individual will also be responsible for supporting students declaring or expressing interest in the assigned College/School. The advisor must have the ability to work autonomously in a complex, team-oriented academic office while also building strong alliances with faculty and other campus partners that support the holistic development of students. The advisor must have a commitment to student success and the ability to listen and analyze academic needs.

Additional Assistance: The Academic Advisor will also be engaged in other activities that support the orientation, onboarding, and consistent communication to UNC Charlotte students. These activities might include teaching and seminar facilitation, event participation, coordinated messaging, and other duties as assigned.
Minimum Education/Experience

  • A Master's degree in career counseling. Student development, higher education, or business is required, along with 1-2 years of experience in business or student counseling at an academic institution.


Preferred Education, Knowledge, Skills and Experience

  • Academic advising and career coaching of undergraduate-level business students is highly desirable, and direct knowledge of professional development for business students and a background in business administration are preferred.
  • The ideal candidate will possess polished interpersonal communication skills, training, and counseling skills with a demonstrated professional demeanor that establishes credibility quickly, inspires confidence, and builds positive relationships.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills, including the ability to demonstrate tact, diplomacy, and maintain a high level of confidentiality, are required with outstanding presentation skills enabling effective, influential communication with students, faculty, staff, alumni, and the business community are vital to this position.
  • Attention to detail, task orientation, and ability to work collaboratively as well as independently to achieve institutional goals and objectives are expected with proficiency with various computer applications, Microsoft Office, and web technology is an essential skill.
