The role - what you'll do

Barr is seeking a senior hydrogeologist to join one of our Minnesota offices to help with challenging hydrogeology projects. In this hybrid role, you will apply hydrogeology skills on projects related to water supply evaluations, remediation of contaminated groundwater, mine planning and development, and groundwater-surface water interactions.

Responsibilities may include working individually or as a part of a project team to assist with conceptual site model development, numerical modeling, aquifer test performance and analysis, sustainability analysis, and reporting. Assignments may also include supervision of project teams. Fieldwork opportunities for this position may be available and may require some out-of-town travel.

The ideal candidate for this position is a clear and confident communicator who builds strong working relationships and provides leadership within multidisciplinary teams. They are adaptable, organized, and proactive in managing complex projects and balancing multiple priorities across field and office settings. They bring advanced technical expertise, sound professional judgment, and consistently ensure the quality and accuracy of project deliverables. They take ownership of client-facing work, demonstrate initiative in identifying solutions, and actively contribute to business development and practice growth. They support and mentor junior staff, fostering skill development and knowledge transfer. Above all, they uphold teamwork, quality, and integrity in delivering impactful hydrogeologic and environmental solutions.

Your impact - key responsibilities

  • Technical knowledge: apply advanced hydrogeology and geoscience expertise to design, oversee, and guide subsurface investigations, groundwater and soil sampling programs, and hydrogeologic data collection. Lead the interpretation of complex data sets to evaluate groundwater flow, contaminant transport, and water sustainability analysis. Provide technical leadership in the application of groundwater models to inform site assessments, remedial strategies, water supply planning, wellhead protection plans, and regulatory decision-making. Apply strong knowledge of the geology and hydrogeology of the Upper Midwest to local projects.

  • Project support: direct and coordinate field programs and logistics, including drilling oversight, monitoring well installation, contractor management, and equipment mobilization. Manage project budgets, schedules, and deliverables, helping ensure alignment with client goals and regulatory requirements. Serve as a primary client contact, communicating project progress, key milestones, and technical recommendations with clarity and confidence.

  • Problem solving: assess complex geologic and hydrogeologic conditions to identify and implement practical, cost-effective solutions to environmental and water resource challenges. Integrate regulatory knowledge, innovative hydrogeologic methods, and sound scientific reasoning to develop strategies that support client objectives and strengthen long-term relationships.

  • Communication: oversee preparation of high-quality technical deliverables, including modeling results and reports. Review and approve client-facing correspondence and present findings and recommendations to project managers, clients, regulators, and stakeholders in a clear and compelling manner.

  • Interpersonal savvy: foster collaboration with multidisciplinary teams, contractors, regulators, and clients. Provide mentorship and technical oversight to junior and mid-level staff, reviewing work products, delegating responsibilities effectively, and creating opportunities for professional growth. Build trusted, productive relationships across projects and actively contribute to practice development and knowledge sharing.

About the opportunity

  • Compensation: anticipated range of $105,000-135,000 annually. Compensation will vary based on relevant experience, education, skill level, and other compensable factors. Employees in this position may also be eligible for a discretionary cash bonus based on team and individual performance. This position is classified as exempt (salaried) under the Fair Labor Standards Act.

  • Hybrid: a hybrid work arrangement may be considered for this position. A hybrid work arrangement refers to splitting time worked between a Barr office and a home office. This position can be based out of Barr's Minneapolis, Duluth, or Hibbing, Minnesota, offices.

  • Travel expectation: willingness to travel and periodically adjust personal schedule to meet project needs.

About you - required core competencies

  • Education: master's degree in geology, hydrogeology, or a related engineering degree.

  • Experience: 10 or more years of work experience directly related to groundwater projects in Minnesota or the Upper Midwest; project management and leadership experience with complex projects.

  • Software: strong quantitative and computer skills, including a familiarity with groundwater models or analytical approaches to evaluate hydrogeologic flow and pumping response.

  • License: Professional Geologist or Professional Engineer license in at least one jurisdiction or the ability to achieve a license within two years.

  • Driver's license: possession of a current, valid driver's license and acceptable driving record.

  • Must be legally authorized to work in the United States without the need for sponsorship by Barr, now or in the future.
