What Your Job Will Be Like

We are seeking a Year-Round Technical Undergraduate Intern to join our Material Control and Accountability (MC&A) Accounting team. The purpose of this team is to deter and detect theft of accountable nuclear material (ANM). We utilize an onboarding program to provide the necessary training for new members to this team. The successful candidate will work with analyzing and interpreting ANM details for reporting into classified federal computer systems. The role of providing positive assurance for ANM assets is a critical safeguards and security requirement which enables mission work across a wide variety of Sandia programs.
On any given day, you may be called on to:
  • Work as part of a team to assess the location and secure condition of nuclear material security assets.
  • Help test and resolve software, coding, or reporting issues with the federal classified system or Sandia bolt-on classified system (once obtaining a security clearance).
  • Participate in physical inventory activities for ANM at various locations at Sandia's Albuquerque, NM site.

If you have an interest in applying your skills toward a safeguards and security career with accountable nuclear material while learning MC&A tools and processes along the way, this may be a great fit for you.

About Our Team

To support the mission, multiple Sandia organizations acquire, use, and possess accountable nuclear materials. The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) requires all sites that possess accountable nuclear materials to establish and maintain nuclear material management (NMM) and Material Control & Accountability (MC&A) programs. Nuclear Material Management programs are designed to ensure that nuclear materials are managed as valuable assets, used appropriately, and disposed of properly when no longer needed. MC&A programs are designed to deter and detect theft and diversion of nuclear material by both outside and inside adversaries. The Nuclear Material Management/MC&A Department develops and implements effective NMM and MC&A programs that are compliant with DOE/NNSA requirements, while supporting line organizations mission objectives.

Security Clearance

Sandia is required by DOE to conduct a pre-employment drug test and background review that includes checks of personal references, credit, law enforcement records, and employment/education verifications. Applicants for employment need to be able to obtain and maintain a DOE Q-level security clearance, which requires U.S. citizenship. If you hold more than one citizenship (i.e., of the U.S. and another country), your ability to obtain a security clearance may be impacted.

Applicants offered employment with Sandia are subject to a federal background investigation to meet the requirements for access to classified information or matter if the duties of the position require a DOE security clearance. Substance abuse or illegal drug use, falsification of information, criminal activity, serious misconduct or other indicators of untrustworthiness can cause a clearance to be denied or terminated by DOE, resulting in the inability to perform the duties assigned and subsequent termination of employment.

EEO

All qualified applicants will receive consideration for employment without regard to race, color, religion, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity, national origin, age, disability, or veteran status and any other protected class under state or federal law.

NNSA Requirements for MedPEDs

If you have a MedPED and you are selected for an on-site interview at Sandia National Laboratories, there may be additional steps necessary to ensure compliance with NNSA security requirements prior to the interview date.
