Description

This position is accountable for managing and coordinating all accounting, office and administrative management, and financial analyses necessary to support, control, and report on operational performance.

The purpose of this position is to plan and control financial operations to assist management in attaining predetermined profit objectives. The controller's functions include GAAP accounting, benefits administration, cost control, cash and credit management, payroll, and computer/information services. Other key accountabilities include accurate and timely month-end closing statements, billing and collection processing, project job cost tracking, and compliance with all ethical, legal, and regulatory requirements.

Duties & Responsibilities
  • Direct all accounting functions including accounts receivable, billing, credit and collections, payroll, accounts payable, cash management, and general ledger.
  • Direct the generation of a predetermined profit, operating budget to ensure upper quartile profitability returns.
  • Ensure adequate working capital to support business needs.
  • Plan future requirements based upon monthly cash projections.
  • Develop a weekly/monthly Flash report to show key business indicators such as receivable/payable ratios, product/service billings, and other important statistics to compare monthly results to budget or prior period data.
  • Implement a project cost accounting process to track monthly billings by project/customer to enable profit and productivity analyses.
  • Measure project costs versus original estimates to ensure gross profit objectives by project and within individual expense items.
  • Ensure that all orders are invoiced in a timely manner. Aggressively follow up with customers and escalate to ensure receivable collection.
  • Direct the efficient operation of computer systems and network access capabilities. Maintain a back-up plan and keep network access times reasonable so as not to affect productivity.
  • Comply with monthly/quarterly state tax filings such as shop expenses, miscellaneous revenue, truck mileage, and apportioned truck usage.
  • Ensure compliance with all covenants and conditions relating to banking, equipment and vehicle loans, pledged securities, and Health/Welfare and Training Trusts.
  • Direct the human resource function including hiring (application processing), 941/W-2 processing, termination, and administration of unemployment claims/COBRA.
  • Manage the office purchasing function (non-job procurements) to analyze cost-saving opportunities.
  • Manage all employee personnel files and evaluation procedures. Ensure that annual performance reviews are conducted with all employees, including seasonal personnel.
  • Maintain periodic updating of the employee manual (handbook).
  • Analyze employee benefits for cost reduction or benefit improvement in the areas of pension and pension reporting, workers' compensation, and life/LTD insurance record management.
  • Conduct a weekly management meeting with direct reports to understand, evaluate, and resolve problems in a timely fashion. Be involved in office administration decisions.
Job Requirements
Required Skills / Qualifications:
  • Proven experience in a senior financial leadership role such as CFO, Controller, or equivalent.
  • Strong knowledge of GAAP accounting principles and financial reporting.
  • Experience managing all core accounting functions, including A/P, A/R, payroll, general ledger, budgeting, and cash management.
  • Demonstrated ability to create and manage operating budgets and financial forecasts.
  • Proficiency in project cost accounting, job cost tracking, and profitability analysis.
  • Strong understanding of compliance requirements for banking, loans, and regulatory filings.
  • Hands-on experience with HR functions such as hiring, benefits administration, and personnel file management.
  • Proficiency with business software, accounting systems, and computer/network operations.
  • Excellent leadership and team management skills, with experience overseeing multiple departments.
  • Strong analytical skills and ability to prepare timely, accurate financial and operational reports.
Preferred Skills / Qualifications:
  • CPA, CMA, or other relevant professional certification.
  • Experience in benefits analysis and cost reduction strategies.
  • Background in developing and maintaining employee handbooks and HR policies.
  • Familiarity with ERP/accounting software and reporting tools.
  • Experience in process improvement initiatives across finance, HR, and administration.
  • Strong negotiation skills for vendor management and cost savings.
  • Experience in a multi-department or multi-location business environment.
