Job Overview

The Georgetown University Global Health Institute (GUGHI) was established in July 2023 and launched in Nov 2024 to serve as a cross-university hub that brings together faculty, staff and students from across disciplines - connecting expertise across research, policy, and delivery - who are dedicated to understanding and addressing the complex factors impacting health on a global scale. By leveraging the strengths of global health centers, institutes, and departments based in different schools at the university, the Institute is facilitating new collaborations and building a vibrant community to impact the world.

Some of Georgetown University's leading global health centers and institutes include the O'Neill Institute for National & Global Health Law, the Center for Global Health Practice & Impact, and the Center for Global Health Science & Security. School-based departments and initiatives include the Department of Global Health in the School of Health, the Science, Technology, & International Affairs program in the Walsh School of Foreign Service, and the Business of Health initiative in the McDonough School of Business.

In addition to its flagship Global Health Student Fellows program, GUGHI hosts weekly global public health seminars and is launching an incubation hub for innovation and a public events series. The Institute supports interdisciplinary collaboratives clustered around specific themes (such as cancer and maternal & child health), while driving new strategic initiatives in fields where Georgetown has distinctive expertise. The two current GUGHI strategic initiatives include Faith & Global Health (which hosts the Georgetown-Lancet Commission on Faith, Trust, & Health) and Government Delivery for Health (which co-hosts the AUDA-NEPAD & Georgetown University Collaborating Center for Health Market Development in Africa). The Institute is also establishing major external partnerships with countries and institutions to strengthen critical mass and reciprocity in the university's applied global health activities.

The Managing Director (MD) plays a central role in strategic planning for the Institute. They are responsible for managing existing programs and identifying new opportunities for growth and impact. They lead on communicating the work of the Institute, securing grants, and fundraising. They also represent the Institute with external partners and help to internally connect and coordinate global health faculty, staff, and students across the University. As the most senior full-time staff member at the Institute, the Managing Director (MD) oversees all activities, budgets, and staff.

Work Interactions

Under the direction of the institute's Director, the Managing Director is the senior full-time academic administrative appointee who oversees operations of this dynamic and growing institute and is responsible for independent development and coordination of all aspects of institute operations under supervision of the Institute's Director.

The Managing Director works closely with GUGHI's senior advisors, distinguished academics and professionals who provide input and support for the Institutes work, as well as the GUGHI Faculty Council, which consists of senior representatives from across the University including all the Schools and major global health centers and institutes. They currently manage four staff, including two core staff (a program coordinator and an events and communications manager) and a two-person team running the Faith & Global Health Initiative (a research program director and a senior fellow). They receive additional support from wider university teams relating to finance, human resources, communications, and advancement. The Managing Director will play a critical role working collaboratively with the Institute Director to steer GUGHI and the broader Georgetown Global Health Community into the future informed by current and future operating contexts.
