We are seeking a self-motivated and technically savvy Cost Accountant to process and maintain cost accounting data, perform month-end and year-end cost close activities, and prepare audit documentation in accordance with internal practices and generally accepted accounting principles (GAAP). We are searching for someone focused on partnering, who is diligent with a continuous process improvement approach and has excellent organizational, prioritization and interpersonal skills. Also important to success is maintaining accuracy in a fast-paced environment.

As a Staff Accountant...

  • Your primary responsibility will be to use Oracle General Ledger (GL) and Projects (PA) applications to review and process labor and non-labor cost on a regular basis. Your attention to detail is crucial to ensuring completeness, accuracy, and compliance with internal policy and regulatory protocols of APL business operations.
  • Using your good eye for business, technical competence, and skills for building successful relationships, you will serve as a technical liaison between the Business Services and IT Services teams to understand user needs and drive efficiency into the business through practice improvement and technical innovation. Cultivating productive relationships and information sharing is essential to the successful execution of APL's missions.
  • We expect you to prepare internal and external audit documentation. Your solution-centric approach will be instrumental in offering ideas to improve information management activities affecting institutional and audit standards.
  • You will perform other staff accountant duties as assigned, including journal entry preparation, treasury management support, JHU data requests, and Defense Contract Audit Agency (DCAA) audit requests.

Qualifications

You meet our minimum qualifications for the job if you...

  • Possess a BS in Accounting, Finance, or other Business-related field with a strong academic background in accounting or equivalent years of experience
  • Have experience with preparing account reconciliations, researching data anomalies, and analyzing financial data
  • Exhibits a self-starter mentality, shows extraordinary initiative, and analyzes and resolves challenges independently and in a team-based setting
  • Are excellent at maintaining accuracy while multitasking, extracting data needs, prioritizing assignments, communicating progress, and meeting deadlines
  • Exhibit outstanding attention to detail and strong organizational skills
  • Are able to collaboratively perform in a dynamic and fast-paced environment
  • Demonstrate strong interpersonal and communication skills, including the ability to form and sustain trusted relationships across all staff and external partners
  • Have a strong desire to learn and can easily adapt to changing environments
  • Show proficiency with business and office applications including MS Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook -- sophisticated Excel knowledge expected

You'll go above and beyond our minimum requirements if you...

  • Certified Public Accountant (CPA) and/or Masters of Business Administration (MBA)
  • Have 2 or more years of experience in accounting
  • Have experience working in an Oracle accounting system environment (i.e., Oracle Projects and General Ledger) and Data Warehouse applications
  • Have experience in a Department of Defense (DoD) or Government contracting environment

The referenced pay range is based on JHU APL's good faith belief at the time of posting. Actual compensation may vary based on factors such as geographic location, work experience, market conditions, education/training and skill level with consideration for internal parity. For salaried employees scheduled to work less than 40 hours per week, annual salary will be prorated based on the number of hours worked. APL may offer bonuses or other forms of compensation per internal policy and/or contractual designation. Additional compensation may be provided in the form of a sign-on bonus, relocation benefits, locality allowance or discretionary payments for exceptional performance. APL provides eligible staff with a comprehensive benefits package including retirement plans, paid time off, medical, dental, vision, life insurance, short-term disability, long-term disability, flexible spending accounts, education assistance, and training and development. $58,700 Annually
