HJF is seeking a Research Assistant I to perform research and/or development in collaboration with others for projects. The Research Assistant provides laboratory and technical support to senior technical and professional staff and solves less complex problems in carrying out research projects in a laboratory environment. This is the first of four levels within the Research Assistant series.

This position will be in support of Dr. Vijay Singh with the Armed Forces Radiobiology Research Institute (AFRRI) at the Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences (USUHS). The Research Assistant will work with Principle Investigator to determine study design in regard to statistical issues, contribute to protocol development, write statistical analysis plans, perform data analysis and inference and write and present reports summarizing findings including publications in peer-reviewed journals.

  • Performs research projects, including the collection and organization of data. Follows instructions and standard operating procedures.
  • Performs data entry in accurate, timely, and efficient manner. Maintains clear and accurate data collection records and inventories in accordance with Good Laboratory practices. Conducts lab work, maintains clear and accurate laboratory records, inventories, and logbooks.
  • Maintains supplies in the laboratory and ensures proper cleanliness and sanitation in accordance with Good Laboratory practices.
  • Creates, collects, disseminates, and maintains appropriate study data. Responsible for assuring that data for statistical analyses and output are complete and accurate, ensuring conclusions are valid.
  • Assists in the preparation of technical reports, summaries, and protocols. Creates and communicates detailed observations on experiments.
  • Performs statistical analyses using appropriate software programs, and validates reproducible statistical applications and programs.
  • Works collaboratively with peers to develop quality project protocols, data analysis summaries, research summary reports, presentations, annual reports, scientific research related materials and manuscript publications.
  • Assists with laboratory research projects using a small animal model, as well as a large animal model, including blood/tissue collection, biochemical assays from animal sources, makes detailed observations about experiments, and provides data analysis and interpretation.
  • Opportunity to write papers and publish in scientific journals.
  • May perform other duties and responsibilities as assigned or directed by the supervisor. This may include attendance of and participation in required training for role.


Education and Experience



  • Bachelor's Degree required

    • Biological sciences preferred

  • Minimum of 0-2 years experience required


Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities



  • Knowledge of standard laboratory techniques and assays such as Luminex, ELISA, and Microscopy.
  • Ability to follow detailed instructions.
  • Good communication and analytical skills.
  • Experience with statistical, graphing, and other relevant software applications (SPSS, GraphPad Prism, SIGMAPLOT, MS Office, EndNote, matlab, etc.) in statistical analysis, data science, and bioinformatics applications.
  • Must also have good writing skills.
  • Good communication and analytical skills are required.
  • Must be able to obtain and maintain and the T1 public trust background investigation.


Physical Capabilities



  • Lifting: Requires lifting materials over 25 lbs.
  • Ability to stand or sit at a computer for prolonged periods
  • Ability to climb, pull, and lift heavy objects


Work Environment



  • This position will take place primarily in a laboratory setting including some work in an animal facility.


Compensation



  • The hourly pay range for this position is $18.25-$25.00. Actual hourly pay will be determined based on experience, education, etc.
