About the Position: The Grounds Maintenance Worker plays a key role in keeping the Port’s outdoor areas clean, safe, and visually appealing. This position is responsible for mowing, trimming, planting, and caring for landscaped areas, as well as maintaining sidewalks, parking lots, and other exterior spaces. The role involves operating and maintaining landscaping equipment, following safety procedures, and supporting special projects or seasonal tasks. Successful candidates will take pride in their work, demonstrate attention to detail, and help create a welcoming environment for employees, visitors, and the community. The Essential Functions: Grounds Maintenance Maintain grounds in a clean, safe, and attractive condition Mow, edge, trim, water, and fertilize grass areas as directed Plant, water, weed, prune, and maintain flower beds, shrubs, and trees Remove trash, litter, leaves, and other debris from grounds, sidewalks, and parking lots Apply herbicides, pesticides, and fertilizers in accordance with safety regulations Equipment Operation & Maintenance Operate lawn mowers, edgers, blowers, trimmers, and other landscaping tools safely and efficiently Perform basic maintenance on equipment, including cleaning, refueling, and minor repairs Report equipment issues or needed repairs to supervisor promptly Safety & Compliance Follow all safety policies and procedures while performing grounds maintenance duties Wear required personal protective equipment (PPE) at all times Maintain awareness of surroundings to prevent accidents and injuries Other Duties Assist with special projects or seasonal maintenance as assigned Support overall Port operations by ensuring outdoor areas are welcoming and well-kept This job description is not designed to cover or contain a comprehensive list. Ability to quickly learn assigned tasks, maintain detailed and accurate records, and adhere to established procedures and safety protocols. Strong ability to work independently with minimal supervision as well as collaboratively within a team, fostering a positive team environment and a spirit of cooperation. Ability to operate light to medium-duty grounds maintenance equipment. Qualifications and Experience: High School Diploma or Equivalent Experience in yard and ground maintenance work. Other Requirements: Valid Mississippi Driver’s License Must pass pre-employment drug screening and background check Must be able to obtain a Transportation Worker Identification Card (TWIC) within 30 days of employment.
